Taranaki
For most visitors, the Taranaki region is synonymous with its strikingly beautiful cone-shaped volcano, Mt Egmont/Taranaki.
The region plays a pivotal role in the country's economic health through its enormous dairy and energy industries. Surfers come from all around the world to ride its west coast waves, and the region is also famous for its rhododendron festival in spring.
Mt Egmont/Taranaki's balanced, symmetrical coned shape can be seen for miles and miles. Visitors are drawn to it like moths to a flame, whether they are those who ride down its slopes on skis or a snowboard, or are looking for a challenging climb, or those who like to hike through its lower reaches.
Driving from New Plymouth to Wanganui takes you through some of the most lush, green farmland in the country, and past the rugged west coast beaches of the South Taranaki Bight.
