Mahakirau Sanctuary is a slice of legendary New Zealand paradise within 600 hectares of native forest estate. Located on the crest of the Coromandel ranges, Mahakirau Sanctuary offers the best of both worlds - total seclusion and privacy, yet easily accessible to the idyllic surf beaches and superb fishing of the Coromandel Coast - just 15 minutes to Coromandel and 25 minutes to Whitianga. Spectacular vistas abound of the surrounding islands, harbours and ancient rock formations - making you feel like you're on top of the world. Our 20 hectare property within the 600 hectare Forest Estate overlooks Castle Rock, an old volcano core that rises above the bush on the backbone of the Coromandel Ranges.
The Estate is totally surrounded by Department of Conservation land and borders the Manaia Kauri Sanctuary. It is an area of outstanding wildlife value with North Island brown kiwi, kereru (wood pigeons) and rare Archeys and Hochstetters frogs present. A significant programme has been implemented to restore the native bush and preserve wildlife resulting in a wonderful dawn chorus.
