Glimpses of the nearby harbour from living room, and across the road from the local school, the kids can play basket ball, play in sandpits under shade cloth, swim with the local kids in the serviced pool open throughout summer, you can watch over them from the comfort of the front porch, and have 'em back for lunch in seconds,

The bathroom has recently had a makeover.

Grab the newspaper from the nearby general store and grab a latte, sit on the wharf adn watch the kid swim, or just relax on the private and sunny back deck. Meander the precincts of this historic timber milling town from the 19th century, and catch views of the lovely Hokianga harbour. The local art gallery features local wonderful art and regular exhibitions, and is open year round.

Within 30 to 60 minutes you' re at the beaches of Opononi, & the Waipoua Kauri Forest. Drive to Kerikeri for the great Sunday Farmers Market, or Paihia for the Bay of Islands This is great base for exploring the whole of the Far North!

This has to be one of the most magical places we have ever stayed. The house is fantastic, a relaxing step back into our antipodean past! It is very clean and has a good kitchen and bathroom. Lovely old-fashioned beds. I highly recommend this as a place to go to really relax. And there are stores at the corner, a jetty to jump off, a school pool, tennis court over the road, no traffic, no phones and birds singing everywhere!

  • Inexplicably, the Hokianga is relatively unfashionable - long may it stay so

Inexplicably, the Hokianga is relatively unfashionable - long may it stay so. And Kohukohu is one of those towns you don't tell anyone about so it can remain your special place (in fact my partner's looking over my shoulder now, instructing me not to give feedback in case interlopers steal 'our' house). But that would be selfish. This is a grand colonial fortress in a magical town. Think old New Zealand. Perfect for kids, there's a school over the road with pool, tennis courts etc. Marvellous
