  • surrounded by NZ bush with spectacular sunset views from the deck

This cabin has the easiest accessibility of all our solitary retreat cabins. It is nestled within a bush setting with views down the valley and out over the Firth of Thames ... which means spectacular sunsets and beautiful skies with only a few similar buildings within sight.

New Zealand’s natural world is right at your doorstep and there is plenty to explore and experience on our 240 acre property, which backs on to the Coromandel Ranges. The Tararu and Ohio rivers are within walking distance and host some beautiful private swimming spots in summer (if you take the time to find them).

This is a solitary retreat cabin, for single occupancy use only (no exceptions unfortunately). It has been designed for people, maybe like you, to take time out, and reconnect or deepen their spiritual practice. Such purpose built facilities are very hard to find and the atmosphere on the property is very special. With literally thousands and thousands of hours of accumulated spiritual practice, these facilities offer a very rare opportunity to experience something powerful and unique. If you need space to write, do artwork, reflect and do practice of any kind this place is ideal.

Due to the remoteness of our huts and particularly if you are a first time solitary retreatant, you will need to be shown in by one of our on-site community members and given some orientation. For this reason we need to know an approximate arrival time. Some cell phone coverage is available but there is not enough solar power to recharge phones or laptop batteries. A limited grocery / supplies shopping service is available for stays of over a week and phones may be recharged at this time by arrangement.

"Amida" is one of a few solitary retreat cabins available at Sudarshanaloka Buddhist Retreat Centre. There is also "Chetul", "Mandalavara" and "Abhaya". Please contact us if you find "Amida" is booked out as another may be available.

Special conditions: Minimum of 2 nights stay. Single occupancy only. If you intend to stay for more than one week a weekly 'top-up' shop for groceries / supplies can be arranged in advance (additional fees may apply). Due to the proximity of the bush, we ask for smokers to do so down by the river and not in the cabin. No open fires permitted on property. Being a Buddhist Retreat Center it is an alcohol and drug free zone. We also request that you eat no meat for the duration of your stay on the land.

My rating is for the nature of the cabin, not the standard of luxury. This is a meditation hut with a lot of character, set in NZ bush, with a view down to the Coromandel Coast. It is ideal for anyone wanting to do a solitary retreat in a tranquil environment.

  • I stayed in Taraire Cabin, a newer one than Amida

I stayed in Taraire Cabin, a newer one than Amida. It is a perfect little meditation hut, in a beautiful setting. Built in a grove of Taraire trees, it overlooks the Firth of Thames. Everything you might need in terms of kitchen and cleaning utensils are provided. Linen can be cheaply hired. I can highly recommend for a tranquil solitary meditation retreat.
