This title may be translated as “the treasured place”, a well deserved name for the expansive wilderness, lakes, forests, mountains, glaciers, fjords - and unique NZ wildlife. A 15 minute lakeside stroll leads to the Bird Park display of endangered and endemic birds including the unique flightless takahe of Fiordland. Te Anau is the natural base for visiting Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, tramping the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Tracks, and several other equally beautiful overnight and day walks. Also home base for the Kepler Challenge Mountain Run & Milford Classic cycle races. Fishing is legendary here (several guides operate locally) and Te Anau Golf Club has a superb 18 hole golf course; clubs and carts available to hire.
Te Anau is 2 hrs drive from Queenstown, Coronet Peak and Remarkables skifields, south coast and Invercargill. If you're touring the Southern Scenic Route / Catlins / Stewart Island, you may like to stay at our other listing, no. 8496).

Very, very comfortable bed and quiet home, nice plantings and grounds to sit out. Washing machine and clothesline there. Though we didn't need the fireplace it was all set to go before we arrived. Attention to cooler nights with heating options added comfort. Home is a bit dated yet comfortable with its homey furnishings.
