Te Anau lies on the edge of Te Wahi Pounamu, South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. This title may be translated as “the treasured place”, a well deserved name for the expansive wilderness, lakes, forests, mountains, glaciers, fjords - and unique NZ wildlife. A 15 minute lakeside stroll leads to the Bird Park display of endangered and endemic birds including the unique flightless takahe of Fiordland. Te Anau is the natural base for visiting Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, tramping the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Tracks, and several other equally beautiful overnight and day walks. Also home base for the Kepler Challenge Mountain Run & Milford Classic cycle races. Fishing is legendary here (several guides operate locally) and Te Anau Golf Club has a superb 18 hole golf course; clubs and carts available to hire.

Te Anau is 2 hrs drive from Queenstown, Coronet Peak and Remarkables skifields, south coast and Invercargill. If you're touring the Southern Scenic Route / Catlins / Stewart Island, you may like to stay at our other listing, no. 8496).

Special conditions: Minimum 2 night stay applies at the Mountaineer Chalet between October and April - allows you to enjoy what's on in our lovely region! Longer term stays in winter negotiable.

  • This property is a charmer

This property is a charmer. The architecture dating from the 50s or 60s with floor to ceiling windows is complemented by eccentric chalet paraphernalia inside and out. The wood fire is wonderful and was a welcome replacement for the TV. The kitchen pantry contained staples which made the stay very easy.

  • The house was very comfortable, beds excellent

The house was very comfortable, beds excellent. The decor lovely with quirky elements. We loved the open fireplace with beanbags. Great welcome touch with cheese and biscuits/milk provided on our arrival. The location was very close to town and next to a walkway to the lake. Very quiet and peaceful.

The Mountaineer Chalet is a gorgeous mid-century modern house in a great location. Just one street back from the lake it has easy access via a laneway alongside the property. Plenty of bedrooms for everyone and a fabulous loungeroom area for relaxing in front of the fireplace. Also has a lovely garden to explore. We really enjoyed our time there and were sad to leave.
