Description

  • Short walk to the Makarora river and 5 mins drive to Lake Wanaka. Near Mt Aspiring National Park
  • Close to great Alpine facilities, jet boating, alpine flights, hunting, fishing and tramping
  • Family friendly suitable for children and pets

The Stone House is a great family Bach set in the amazing Makarora River valley surrounded by the mountains. The river is just a few minutes walk away for the keen fishermen or for the kids to swim in the summer, but the property is fenced with plenty of indoor and outdoor areas to enjoy and keep an eye on the little ones.

Boat launching areas at the lake and the river. Mt Aspiring National Park is just a short drive a away with amazing walks including the Blue Pool Track for a gentle stroll or the whole national park for serious trampers. The Haast Pass is just a half hour away and you can do a day trip to the West Coast and Jacksons Bay. Wanaka is a 45 minute drive and the Cadrona ski field another 15 minutes from there for winter sports.

There is a cafe and bar a few minutes drive away in one direction and the tourist centre just a few more minutes away in the other direction.

The house has stone walls which are cool in summer and retain the heat from the big log fire in the winter. This is a family Bach that has been in the family for three generations and is being renovated as we can get to it so if you want to relax and not fuss about using miss matched plates then you will enjoy this place.

There is a deck from the upstairs living space with a view up the Wilkin Valley and a great fire pit in the back yard for sitting around on cooler evenings (fire warnings permitting)

There are spare mattresses if you need to put some of the kids on the floor and room on the grassy section to pitch a tent or two. There is only one bathroom but there is a second outside toilet.

Special conditions: Suitable for couples, families with younger and older children, or groups. Pets allowed with prior approval, outside dog kennel. Off peak Rate: $150 for first 4 people, additional adults $10 per night, additional kids free Mid Dec to Mid Feb and Easter Rate: $190 for first 4 people, additional adults $10 per night, additional kids free

Absolutely loved this place and can't wait to come back! This lovely stone house was perfect for us, has so much charm, cosy, very roomy, had everything we needed. Very warm in house even on very cold nights thanks to lovely pellet stove or woodburner, either of them heats house perfectly. Great yard all fenced in, our two little dogs loved it! So wonderful to wake up to birdsong and lovely virws of the mountains and fall asleep to sounds of distant waterfalls and frogs and millions of stars. :)

Although a little further from Wanaka than we expected, the location is lovely. We arrived at night to a fire and a beautiful old house. But when we awoke in the morning, we were nestled within beautiful mountains with birds singing. Such a lovely location. Would definitely recommend.
