Bach or holiday home | 90 Mile Beach (Ahipara) | #20908
Whether you’re a couple, family or bigger group, Heartland Eco Retreat is off-grid and remote - offering a true dark skies sanctuary experience.
This one-of-a-kind Far North holiday home is nestled within a tranquil forest glade at the base of the mighty Orowhahana Mountain, deep inside the Herekino Forest.
Surrounded by fresh water, native bush and birdsong, it’s the ultimate place to “drop out” and enjoy complete peace, privacy and total serenity.
A cluster of four buildings - the main ones of which are made from earth cement, in the same bohemian style made famous by Northland’s Kawakawa-based artist Hunderwasser - each enjoys a view of the tranquil, heart-shaped pond, fed by a mountain spring.
Soak under the light of the Milky Way in the earth cement hot tub, stoke the outdoor fireplace, dine alfresco on the large Spanish-style patio of the main house, devour crispy woodfired pizzas, straight from the pizza oven and sunbathe on the white-sand beach beside the pond.
Heartland Eco Retreat is conveniently located on the main west coast highway in Northland - between the Hokianga Harbour and Ahipara. It is just a short 15-minute drive from Ahipara and the entrance to 90-Mile Beach and only 23 minutes to Kaitaia, where supermarkets are available to top up supplies.
An ideal base to explore the stunning Far North, a “back to nature” family holiday with the kids or for artists and writers seeking a truly creative retreat. Your booking guarantees exclusive usage.
The driveway was a work in progress however, we have completed the new all-wheel drive access.
Smoking is allowed outside only. The pond is not suitable for small children. Like to holiday with your dog or pet? With prior approval, Heartland Eco Retreat is pet-friendly accommodation. Loved staying in the clay Hunderwassser style huts, so much character and whimsy. You felt like you could be almost camping, except for comfortable beds and hot showers. Wonderful having the indoor and outdoor fires going, the piano and games - we really enjoyed having no wifi distractions, and just enjoying the space. We had everything we needed and nothing we didn't. It was great to show Hunter how to toast bread, without a toaster... cook on embers, sleep on sunset. We'll be back!
We absolutely loved the place. It was quirky and full of charm. If you're looking for somewhere a bit different and you want to unplug for a while, this is the place. Loved the hot tub and the pizza oven. It was clean and tidy and we loved the charm of using candles to complement the solar powered lights. Comfy beds too. The driveway is an adventure with 2 little streams to cross and a solid hill. Definitely best with a 4x4 type vehicle. Would highly recommend.
The property failed to live up to expectations. The caretaker of the property couldn't meet us so he sent the cleaning lady instead who knew nothing about how the property works. The hot water heater for the hot tub wasn't working. Neither was the gas stove. The 'shower' was just a pencil thin dribble of water. We had to bring all the firewood in ourselves even for just the one night. Generally dusty in the house and a possum living in the ceiling cavity kept us awake most of the night.
