Description

  • Mud brick hot tub and outdoor baths
  • Alfresco dining with large patio and woodfired pizza oven
  • Earth cement buildings in a Hunderwasser style

Heartland Eco Retreat is a one-of-a-kind Far North holiday home nestled within a forest glade at the base of the mighty Orowhahana Mountain, inside the Herekino Forest. Surrounded by fresh water, native bush and birdsong, it’s the ultimate place to “drop out” and enjoy complete peace, privacy and total serenity.

A cluster of four buildings - the main ones made from earth cement, in the bohemian style famous by Northland artist Hunderwasser - each enjoys a view of the heart-shaped pond, fed by a mountain spring. Soak under the light of the Milky Way in the earth cement hot tub, stoke the outdoor fireplace, dine alfresco on the large Spanish-style patio of the main house, devour crispy woodfired pizzas, straight from the pizza oven and sunbathe on the white-sand beach beside the pond.

Heartland Eco Retreat is just a short 15-minute drive from Ahipara and the entrance to 90-Mile Beach and only 23 minutes to Kaitaia, where supermarkets are available to top up supplies. The property is completely off the grid. There is no wi-fi or internet connection, mobile coverage is limited to Vodafone and limited 240v power available.

There's four things to know before you arrive at Heartland in order to ensure a relaxing retreat:

1) The main internal kitchen has a gas oven, fridge and fridge freezer - all suitable for food storage

2) Bring ice and a chilly bin for cold beer

3) All rooms have solar lighting and there is a small inverter with one 240v charging point in the main house. We recommend reading torches be brought and that you charge some items in your cars.

4) Linen and tea towels are supplied. Please bring your own beach and bath towels.

Special conditions: Smoking is allowed outside only. The pond is not suitable for small children. Like to holiday with your dog or pet? With prior approval, Heartland Eco Retreat is pet-friendly accommodation. We have chickens on site so dogs need to be on a lead or stock trained. The driveway is a work in progress with two easy stream fords and a steep hill. You will need to drive assertively and alternative access is available weather permitting. Please contact us in advance.

Loved staying in the clay Hunderwassser style huts, so much character and whimsy. You felt like you could be almost camping, except for comfortable beds and hot showers. Wonderful having the indoor and outdoor fires going, the piano and games - we really enjoyed having no wifi distractions, and just enjoying the space. We had everything we needed and nothing we didn't. It was great to show Hunter how to toast bread, without a toaster... cook on embers, sleep on sunset. We'll be back!

  • We absolutely loved the place

We absolutely loved the place. It was quirky and full of charm. If you're looking for somewhere a bit different and you want to unplug for a while, this is the place. Loved the hot tub and the pizza oven. It was clean and tidy and we loved the charm of using candles to complement the solar powered lights. Comfy beds too. The driveway is an adventure with 2 little streams to cross and a solid hill. Definitely best with a 4x4 type vehicle. Would highly recommend.

  • The property failed to live up to expectations

The property failed to live up to expectations. The caretaker of the property couldn't meet us so he sent the cleaning lady instead who knew nothing about how the property works. The hot water heater for the hot tub wasn't working. Neither was the gas stove. The 'shower' was just a pencil thin dribble of water. We had to bring all the firewood in ourselves even for just the one night. Generally dusty in the house and a possum living in the ceiling cavity kept us awake most of the night.

  • Thank you Leigh for a beautiful stay

Thank you Leigh for a beautiful stay. Unique and amazing place with a brilliant view of a small pond and the amazing forest that surrounds the place. Hamish was very helpful and made us feel at home. Leigh who communicated with us was vert organised and already had everything arranged for us. You only need a forward drive or a high car to get from the road to the house as the drive way is very Steep . Other than that great Place . Thank you :).
