A charming 1860s original early settlers cottage, recently restored to a high standard, providing unique accommodation. Enjoy the modern facilities and fantastic rural coastal location, central for all travel and tourist options.
The rural location is peaceful and the cottage enjoys a private, pretty cottage garden with table and chairs and sun umbrella. Newly reclad and insulated. You can relax and observe the night sky in this area as it is unspoilt by artificial lights, it is ideal and spectacular for star gazing.
You have your own parking right right in front of the cottage and your own entry to it from there. Step from your car into another world of rustic, old worldly and romantic charm. Step back in time and ponder the building methods and lifestyles of the settler families.
Come and explore a wide range of beaches, walks and boat trips. We are close to Portobello Village, the wildlife centre of Otago, with yellow eyed penguins and little blue penguins, the albatross colony, seals, sea lions, occasional whales and dolphins, birdlife and more. Larnach Castle and its wonderful garden are a short drive away. Outstanding arts and crafts are to be found on the Peninsula. Many sports including surfing, sea kayaking, cycling, .
We are about 30 mins from Dunedin along the spectacular harbourside road. We are also on the bus route to and from the central city. Cyclists enjoy the Peninsula roads and the city is constructing a new cycle trail which will go around the whole harbour.
Its an easy walk or cycle ride, or short drive to the popular Portobello Village and Bay. Portobello provides a great range of walks, restaurants, cafes, galleries, a friendly pub and well stocked village shop for your basic grocery needs.
Self contained and self catering, we can provide choices for you, including meals and tours by arrangement.
The owners live in the property next door, Crabapple Cottage, and are available to help you with any special requests.
Special conditions: The cottage is very old so guests are asked to treat it gently. We collect our own rain water which is excellent to drink, how much we have depends on the rain gods! We aim to conserve water where possible. The attic is accessed by a fold-up loft ladder/attic staircase, which is new and safe but narrower than a full staircase. It also has a stair gate at the top for safety. The kitchen has a small oven, a microwave and other equipment, fine for most peoples needs (i.e. not a full size oven).

This was a wonderful stay on the Otago peninsula. The cottage is quaint with a real old world charm. Although the rooms are small (as you would expect), the whole cottage is really well appointed - beds are comfortable, the bathroom is a good size and the kitchen/living room was fine for the four of us. The late summer garden was stunning while we were there and we enjoyed sampling the veggies and 'smelling the roses' while we ate lunch in the sun. Recommended.
This property is very small, quaint and very rustic but not for everyone. There are two bedrooms although one requires a climb up a ladder. Kitchen is very small and contains frig (in hallway), hotplate, microwave etc but not really feasible to cook for a party of 4. Bathroom was great. It is perfectly located - much better than Dunedin itself - for local attractions of blue penguin observing, yellow eyed penguin sanctuary and albatross centre and cruise. Would recommend.
The Settlers Cottage is full of character. A comfortable place to stay and explore the Otago Peninsula. In summer the garden is beautiful. We enjoyed sitting outside amongst the large garden with its cottage flowers and bountiful vegetables - so relaxing.
