Library of books and travel advice; games, cards; hammocks; bird whistle; wood-burning inside stove; fish spear & oyster gear.

There is a wide and easy walkway 100m along to the harbour waters of Waitapu Bay; at high tide, step off the land into knee-deep water: this is the perfect spot to swim or fish, or go kayaking (kayaks provided); at low tide, walk along the foreshore under the aged pohutukawa trees and pretend you are Robinson Crusoe.

Approximately 50m away from the cabin is a large macrocarpa seating bench with sea & yacht views, where not even birds notice one; and a wood-fired barbeque is also provided for outdoor dining.

The 400m flat access road is lined with newly-planted native trees and flaxes, ideal for a morning/evening stroll. There are other bush walks marked on the property.

The sewerage system is completely eco-friendly. Two huge water tanks hold an ample supply of drinking and showering water.

Orcas and dolphins often enough seen in the harbour. Big Game fishing - marlin, etc- a local speciality.

Fish from the property, or from the wharf: fish regularly caught include John dory, snapper & kahawai. Ocean sailing charters, art and crafts outlets, kauri forests, all await you.

Walk up St Paul's Rock or stroll the 1.5kms down to the local Marlin Pub or Fishing Club, both with restaurants.

Lovely beaches at Tauranga Bay (15 minutes' drive) and Taupo Bay for surfing (40 minutes' drive). Thai, Indian, and Fish and Chip restaurants within a short drive away.

Longer walks: to Lane Cove hut 2 hours; the Mahinepua Peninsula Coastal Walk (1.5hours). Other great walks: Taratara Boulders, Puketi

A very cosy and quiet place with everything we needed and great views. The location felt very secluded which fit us perfectly. We had a good time kayaking and hiking during the day. Enjoyed the warmth of the fireplace in the evening as well as the local ruru visiting the cabin at night.

    Owner/manager responds:

Hi Elvar Cosy is the word!- that wood-burning stove makes toast of the interior; well, hopefully not literally!- anyway, NEW inside is a Fire-Blanket in case fire gets out of hand; this joins the existing Fire-Extinguisher. AND NEW to be installed soon: an outside Bath (with Bubbles provided!) 25m away from Lodge, set under tree ferns with sea views (of course!). The ruru is NZ's native owl, aka Morepork from the sound it makes. Now with Spring here Quail families visit La Grange; and Wekas.

  • La Grange is the perfect place to get away from it all!...

La Grange is the perfect place to get away from it all! It still has the comforts of home and is close to town but you can decide how much contact you want. The birdsong is amazing, you can go exploring around La Grange, go kayaking, gather oysters. A wonderful part of NZ and it's easy to see why Terry is so proud of his place!

We found this property to be everything we wanted and expected from the posted pictures and descriptions. We want secluded, peaceful, natural, comfortable and environmentally friendly accommodations and LaGrange has all of this. The cottage was thoughtfully supplied, the bed is very comfortable (and a nice place to be with the door open to the views and sounds of the birds--moreporks, kiwis, etc.), the linens are top notch and the library and games a wonderful resource of entertainment.
