ACTIVITIES

The town centre has ample shopping, cafes, and clubs, minutes to the Pacific Ocean for beachcombing, fishing, or an original BBQ experience on ‘Whakamahi’ beach – a beach frequented by huge, centuries old native timbers that have been washed down river and cast onto the sand, they lie there in a state of presence, it’s a beach deeply entrenched in local Maori tradition, stories and history.

A short drive north to the majestic natural wonder, ‘Lake Waikaremoana' where you can make a unique trecking experience through timeless virgin forests with impressive waterfalls, pack a lunch and trout fishing line, take a boating voyage into one of the many sparkling bays the lake has to offer or simply stand in awe of this dramatic inland fresh water sea.

East takes you to the promontory ‘Mahia Peninsula’ that juts out dramatically into the Pacific Ocean. Here is the fisherman’s Mecca providing a variety of crustaceans, crayfish and an array of sea food from the unusual rock shelves and reefs. Swimming is safe for families and surfing spots are plentiful

‘Morere’ thermal hot spring water baths are a must for a day of remedial revitalization, said to be the best in the land and only a short drive.

Wairoa claims a mini climate of almost sub tropical temperatures with its unusual topography and fertile soil.

Activities include kayaking on the rivers or easy cycling along the river track provided. There is hunting in the hills that surround, where deer, duck, geese and boar can be on the dinner table for supper. The rich Maori culture may be experienced with the many programmed events on the calendar.
