Castlepoint is a hugely popular destination renowned for it's dramatic landscape and incredible surfing. There is also a lagoon area which is perfect for more sedate water sports such as canoeing, stand up paddle boarding and smaller children. The local shop/tearooms are two doors away. They stock all the basics and do great takeaways plus L'Affare coffee. There is a golf course located 5 minutes drive away plus The Whakatiki- a great local pub serving great food. Fishing is a way of life with plenty of kaimoana including paua. Pipis can be collected just a meter or two from shore which make superb patties. There are numerous local walks which offer stunning views, ie climbing Castlerock. Sometimes in summer there is the amazing spectacle of the phosphorescent micro organisms which lie just underneath the surface of the sand. When you walk on the beach after dark they illuminate your footsteps- an incredible phenomena!

Castlepoint beach was voted number 5 best beach in New Zealand in 2014. It is beautiful and expansive and lined with Pohutakawa- classic New Zealand.

There is an amazing big sand dune at one end of the beach which is superb for speeding down on a boogie board.

Mataikona is a small settlement 10/15 minutes drive over the hill where there is an even bigger sand dune plus some incredible rock formations- not to mention rock pools and paua hunting at low tide.

Walk up the back hillside section of the batch and relax with superb views. It is one big playground for children and adults alike and is the perfect holiday spot to relax and wind down. There are two surfboards, boogieboard, golf clubs & surfcaster fishing rod available for you to use.

We loved our stay here! Awesome location, right across the road from the beach, in a very cool little bach that had everything we needed - perfect for a short family break away! Highly recommend.

  • Comfy, characterful two-bedroom bach for five of us

Comfy, characterful two-bedroom bach for five of us. All the essentials were provided - no frills - but this is just the way a bach ought to be! The view from the verandah is lovely, the sea is right across the road, the fireplace makes the house cosy on a cold night, the shop is two doors away, there are lots of great walks nearby - Castlepoint is a wonderful place for a holiday and Kotahi is a cute little place to stay.

  • The location is excellent

The location is excellent. The woodburner is great and there's great hot water. Everything works. The outside is quaint but inside the house is tired and needs a thorough clean. I had hayfever all weekend. The main queen bed mattress needs updating as the slump is terrible.
