Bach or holiday home | National Park | #31754
This is wonderful bach full of character, and is an old mill house which belonged to the local timber mill from the 1940-50s. It then spent several years as the Tauranga ski club, before being lovingly restored into a groovy bach full of rustic charm. It's the perfect place to getaway and relax, or to use as a base after your high octane adventures around the Central Plateau.
It's located a 2 minute walk from The Park restuarant & bar, and 4 minutes from The Schnapps bar where you can enjoy dinner and a drink and a game of mini putt for the kids. 6-7 minute walk to the lovely Railway Cafe and the start of Fishers Track and the Marton Sash & Door Cycleway.
If you enjoy hiking there are several reasons to pull on your hiking boots and go exploring. The most obvious is the famous Tongariro Crossing, but there are many other great walks in the region. Check out the Owhango Lagoon for a beautiful 2 hour walk through the bush and stop off at the cafe there for a bite to eat and a great coffee. There is also the Tama Lakes, Silica Rapids, Whakapapaiti Valley, Taranaki Falls & plenty more.
Take a day trip to the awesome Ruatiti Domain. Bring some tyre tubes and firewood to float down the river & have a BBQ in one of the free old school BBQs afterwards.
If you are into mountain biking we have the Fishers track, 42nd Traverse or head to Horopito and do the Old Coach Rd to Ohakune. When you arrive at Ohakune stop in at the famous Powderkeg for a beer and get the shuttle back to your car in Horopito (have a sober driver!). While you’re there call into the fascinating Horopito Motors full of vintage car wrecks piled on top of each other. The kids will love it!!
On rainy days you can snuggle up in front of the fire with a good book, watch a DVD , play cards or just have a good yarn with each other.
This is an awesome place to create some great memories in summertime as well as winter.
Special conditions: Please note that there is no fire guard so care must be taken with young children.

Thank you so much for sharing your magical little home away from home with my son and I. It was exactly what we needed. Every part of the cabin sung out to us with love and warmth and we felt safe, happy and snug. What a special place and what a wonderful holiday we had. My son actually kissed the house goodbye when we left and called it our "new home" haha! I explained that it was a holiday home, but yes, we will return!
The Tongariro Hut is very cosy and enjoyable. Nice view of both mountains. All is nearby in just a few minutes. Best walk in the evening is to the Railway Station Restaurant, have an awesome dinner with a nice glass then stroll back to the warm Tongariro Hut. We had a very relaxing stay with good early season skiing. We were the first ones entering the elevator to Happy Valley! What an improvement!! We definitely will return to Tongariro Hut.
This place is AMAZING!!! The photos can't capture the warm relaxed atmosphere this place has, its very well equipped with every thing you need and nothing you don't. When you first see the place Initially you don't think it's much until go inside then you will spend the next ten or so minutes looking around as this old railway hut has been so carefully been restored and decorated with so much love, care and skill. We loved Our stay in this Beautiful little eclectic hut. ??
