Description

  • A glorious cottage across all seasons. Children under 16 years stay for free.
  • Rear entrance and plenty of off-street parking for car, boat or trailer.
  • Cleaning fee of $50 applies to one night bookings. Multiple night bookings incur no cleaning fee.

Hollyhock Cottage has been a much-loved home for generations of families. The roughcast and stone building has been built on to lovingly over the years to create a haven of nooks and crannies. There are 3 cosy bedrooms, a snug living area, a central kitchen and dining area, and a gorgeous sun-room. Outside there six garden areas, including a courtyard, flower beds, a cricket lawn and horse-paddock.

Bring your horse, bring your bikes and bring your fishing gear. Use the cottage as a writing retreat or use it as a base for the Central Otago Rail Trail, mountain biking, hiking, skiing and ski touring, and adventures in the nearby conservation reserves of Central Otago.

Hollyhock Cottage is nestled in Ophir village. This old gold-mining village has a historic post-office to explore with the friendliest post-mistress in New Zealand, a stunning cafe, a cosy pub and, on seasonal weekends, tantalising vintage shops. Roses, poppies, hollyhocks and lavender abound. Kids will love the well-maintained village pool in the summer and the snowballs and frost in winter. There are swimming holes, picnic areas and walking tracks close by.

Ophir is walking distance to the beautiful Manuherikia River and the famous Daniel O'Connell bridge. Just a short 2 km bike ride over the river is Omakau and the Central Otago Rail Trail. The village is in the heart of Central Otago - 15 minutes from Alexander and Clyde, just over one hour from Queenstown and Wanaka, and two hours from Dunedin. It is around 90 minutes to the skifields.

In all seasons, but especially autumn, the village and surrounding areas is a photograher's paradise. Autumn is a blaze of gold and light. In spring, a purple haze covers the craggy schist hills as the thyme flowers. Winter is a time of simplicity and structure, and summer is dominated by big blue skies and dry landscapes.

Special conditions: $50 cleaning charge for one-night-only bookings. No cleaning charge for multiple night bookings. Continental breakfast on request. Ask about pets. Smoking outside only.

  • The house was awesome and I felt relaxed and comfortable

The house was awesome and I felt relaxed and comfortable. The shower was brilliant and the BBQ was a wee beauty. I did however experience difficulty navigating the TV / DVD set up, I am really technologically challenged at the best of times. Just the basic on/off is all I ask. I read books instead and drank wine. Awesome

    Owner/manager responds:

Thanks very much for that lovely feedback. I will update the instructions for the DVD player so it is super easy to use in future. There is nothing more frustrating than wanting to watch a good movie and not being able to!

Historic cottage located in small heritage township. Stunning landscapes and history at every turn and very good southern hospitality. Cottage cosy and clean with beautiful stained glass and décor, big book collection and DVD collection and firewood keeping the frost at bay and warm heaters so a great retreat and area to explore.
