Description

With mountain views on three sides, the cottage is 22 km from Hokitika on the road to the stunning Hokitika Gorge. It was built in the 1950's for the farmer's father on a small terrace to keep it high and dry. Beautiful original wooden floors throughout complement the rustic and eclectic decor. Modern renovations are in character and great beds assure a comfortable sleep. The covered deck was built to the sun and allows all weather outdoor living. On a clear night, stars fill the sky. Farm machinery, cows, milk tankers, and cars heading to the Gorge are seen occasionally. The Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve is 10 minutes away as is the character filled Kokatahi pub and cafe. Lake Kaniere with hiking and swimming is 20 minutes away. Off the main tourist trail, Camelback Cottage is a great place to relax and unwind.

  • Beautiful, well maintained cottage with heaps of character

Beautiful, well maintained cottage with heaps of character. The location was fantastic, loved the farm setting and views. We also enjoyed the fire which made the house incredibly warm.

Property itself is idyllic and very well set up with a lovely garden and beautiful views; large, but not difficult to heat up indoors. The road is very close to the house and, as mentioned by other guests, the traffic noise does sometimes tend to detract from the feeling of tranquillity; double-glazing would be good, at least for the bedrooms. An excellent situation to explore the local area.

  • Lovely, secluded, rural property

Lovely, secluded, rural property. Central location ( close to Hokitika, Hokitika Gorge and the fantastic lake Kaniere!!). This place is huge for only two bedrooms! but toasty warm and it has all the things you would expect and more. WE RECOMMEND IT!! :)

  • Lovely place to stay with great views

Lovely place to stay with great views. Great outdoor living area on the decking. The bath inside is a real treat. The house is well equipped and we were pleased to have good wifi. Good heating options as well. I was glad to be forewarned of the gorge traffic from other reviews as the road was quite busy at times. Not a reason to avoid staying but good to know to expect to hear a bit of traffic.
