The bach is just one vacant section back from the beach. There is nothing blocking your views out to the open sea. You can continually see and hear the sea or the surf when it gets up - from the bach, from the deck & yard. The beach has beautiful soft sand and you can walk for 8 kms westward towards Opotiki while looking out to White Island smoking on the horizon or walk 5.5 kms eastward to Opape towards the East Cape as the cliffs melt into the distance ahead. There is the Motu bike trail weaving it's way through the dunes in both east and west directions from the bach. The westward track takes you back into Opotiki township just 7.5 kms away. The bach is on state highway 35 set in a rural backdrop but amongst a group of other baches so you feel safe day and night when walking or swimming on the beach. People are very friendly and say hello when you walk along. The beach is so long that it can be all to yourself but you can usually see other people further down somewhere else, but it is never crowded. It is a good safe beach for swimming in as the waves are good but not too big and it doesn't drop off too quick. The sandy strip is wide and there are low dunes so the baches are usually hidden view from the beach, so this adds to privacy when sunbathing or just chilling out. It is like you are on a desert island paradise when you hit the beach and the sound of the waves engulfs you. The beach is good for surfcasting, long-lining from kayak or other type kontiki setups. There is enough room for every type of activity for all. In summer people light fireworks and fires along the beach at night with the driftwood or when fishing. You may even see the occasional horse rider on the beach! There are a few access points for quad bikes or four wheel drives for night fishing but you never feel crowded on a beach so long. 7 day service station / general store is just 450m away. Only 2.5 hour drive to top of the East Cape or through the Waioeka Gorge to Gisborne. Beautiful spot

The home was cold with only one panel heater in the main bedroom. Due to the wet weather access closer to the main door entrance at the back of the house was poor. Vehicles had to be left at the bottom of the main road s/highway 35. Having a small child and having to cart baggage etc up and down the hill in the rain sure placed a damper on everything. The rain left ruts in the ground and a hollow in the drive which will need to be filled sooner rather than later. Maybe ok in the summer

    Owner/manager responds:

Thanks for your feedback Josie. Yes that torrential rain took away a bit of the bottom of the drive. I will have to sort that soon, although my vehicles still have no problem. I have also supplied another oil heater there now.
