  • The Appleshaw Cottage is a part of a heritage Headmaster’s House built in 1880.
  • It has a barn like feel to it with French doors that open right out to a sunny courtyard.
  • Only a 3 min drive (or 12 min walk) to Tarureka Estate, a popular wedding venue.

Beautifully presented with all the modern home comforts you need, stylish open plan living ( gym), downstairs double and mezzanine queen bedrooms with a cozy reading space. A quiet, warm and restful cottage - just the perfect place to come back to after a day of exploring what Wairarapa has to offer.

Amongst the cafes and antique stores of Featherston, you'll find the Fell Locomotive Museum. It houses the only Fell engine in the world, a survivor from the days of the Rimutaka Railway.

Next door is The Heritage Museum which tells the story of the historic Featherston military base and its role as a prisoner of war camp in World War II.

You can cycle the old railway line on the Rimutaka Rail Trail through tunnels and over ridges as it winds between Cross Creek in Featherston to Kaitoke on the Upper Hutt side. You can also spend a day biking at your leisure between many award-winning vineyards of Martinborough (16km away), cruising along quiet country roads, sampling boutique wines and enjoying local deli food.

Further east on SH 2 you'll find Tauherenikau Racetrack which offers equestrian events and jet-boating as well as Greytown known for its delicious food, shopping and cute colonial cottages.

South of Featherston are the shores of Lake Wairarapa, the largest wetland area in the lower North Island.

Featherston is also a departure point for Lake Ferry and Cape Palliser. A drive through steep cliffs and Ngawi fishing village brings you to Cape Palliser Lighthouse, seal colonies, surf and swim beaches, fishing and diving.

Complementary breakfast provisions provided for your first day of stay. There is also free Wi-Fi and a selection of books and DVDs for your entertainment.

Dogs are welcome with prior agreement on condition that they get on with other dogs (two friendly host dogs on site).

The cottage was lovely, tidy, and had a warm, homely feel to it. We were disappointed to wake on Sunday realising it was time to leave. A wonderful place to stay and amazing people to deal with.

  • Natalia and Marc were lovely to deal with

Natalia and Marc were lovely to deal with. They left us a light breakfast and let us store our backpacks after we checked out. The cottage is short walk to town and Tarureka Estate. One negative was there was no curtains in the bedroom.
