“Beach Niche” is a 5 minute walk from the white sand of Waihi Beach a ‘fair dinkum’ kiwi beach renowned for its surf. Walk or bike the 9 km of white sandy beach from rock pools at the North end to the breakers of the Bowentown bar. Surf Lifesaving patrols operate at both ends of the beach over the summer.
Walking and cycling tracks abound. From the North end walk over the hills to Orokawa Bay, a pristine, unspoiled sandy beach with gnarly pohutukawa trees giving shade. 45 minutes each way.
Five minutes walk and you’re at the Waihi Beach Village offering a grocery store/post office, deli, butcher, bakery, chemist, hardware, liquor store and a number of boutiques and cafes.
Waihi Beach Produce Market, Sundays 9 to noon over summer.
Katikati Plant & Produce Market, Fridays 4 to 6 pm year round.
Anzac Bay & Bowentown
The safe harbour waters of Anzac Bay are a 10 minute drive (or you can cycle) south to the Bowentown Headlands. These contain several Maori pa sites easily reached via walking tracks. A 15 minute walking track from the northern end of the Anzac Bay parking lot takes you over the hill to the crystal clear swimming waters of Shelly Bay.
