Ruru Lodge is reached via a scenic drive along the Whanganui River Road. The lodge is on the opposite side of the river to the road and is accessed via an aerial cable car across the river or by jet boat (with a local tour operator). Secure off road parking is provided.

Part of 'The Flying Fox' property, Ruru Lodge a unique cottage style lodge, built from reclaimed materials with an abundance of native timber. Situated on it's own in a garden setting overlooking the Whanganui river, it has the National Park as its backdrop. Consequently, there is an abundance of bird life and deer are commonly seen on the property. The Whanganui River Valley has a warm micro-climate which enables figs, avocados, tamarillos and a wide variety of other heritage fruits to be grown on site.

The property is managed on Eco-friendly principles with an emphasis on sustainability. Although there is mains electricity the site is 'off grid' for all other services and is in an area of no cell phone coverage. There is however, internet access at the property which is free for guests to use.

The lodge has no TV but does have an extensive collection of books, games and LPs.

You can choose to relax and simply enjoy the comfortably appointed lodge or extensive gardens, take a stroll along the river bank to the remains of the old Koriniti Post office, swim in the river or take a more a adventurous climb up to the ridge for expansive views. At the end of the day the covered deck is an ideal place to relax with a glass of wine or fire up the open air bush bath and enjoy a pleasant soak under the stars.

The owners of the property are on site at all times to help with any queries or as a source of local information.

Local activities include mountain biking, walking, canoeing and jet boat trips. This place is all about relaxing but if city life is calling the historic township of Whanganui is easily accessed for a day trip.
