The Duchess Pool Cabin at Kowhai Flat, above the mighty Tongariro River is a trout fishing spot that has proved bountiful for many noted visitors including American writer Zane Grey in 1926. He was followed by the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, later The Queen Mother) in 1927 and the Duchess pool was named in her honour. Several Governors General later enjoyed the fishing at Kowhai Flat.
The small but comfortable cabin has been used by only a few lucky anglers since the 1950s but now we are happy to welcome guests, who we hope will enjoy the private access to the world renowned trout pools.
Staying here puts you right in the thick of the action - tumble out of bed and walk a few metres down to the Tongariro.
The sunny cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, comfy couches and beds with spare blankets. Please bring your own sheets and pillowcases or hire from us. Enjoy meals on the deck and make use of the BBQ if you wish.
We look forward to welcoming you to our slice of paradise!
