This cosy cottage is nestled in native bush just 5 minutes walk from beautiful Lake Rotoiti, a favorite spot for sailing, fishing, swimming and other watersports. The cottage has a sunroom which looks out to the St Arnaud range close by, rising to 6.000 feet and the lounge a log burner for keeping snug. There is an abundance of short walks and tramps, some of which offer spectacular views. Close by is one of New Zealand’s ‘Land Islands’, being an area where intensive predator control has resulted in an abundance of birdlife.

For the more energised, the park offers a wide range of tramping experience, ranging from short day trips to expeditions of several days with ample alpine experience for those who want it.

There are mountain bike trails, a gliding club, a golf course, and hunting opportunities, all nearby.

Lake Rotoiti is close to Rainbow skifield, the Marlborough wine region, and Nelson. It is under 2 hours drive to the Picton ferry, and under three to Westport airport.

While we allow pets, please note that these are forbidden from the adjacent National Park. The cottage is ‘winterised’ from April to October, requiring guests to follow a clearly documented list of instructions on arriving and leaving, for draining the water system. There is a well equipped shop in the village, a short walk away.

The location was fine, but the property (outside) was uncared for and untidy, just an observation. The house was musty and grubby. The lounge furniture is old and stained. The kitchen sink and wooden bench are mouldy and stained. There is a very old and substandard fridge in a shed outside. A picture on the website was of a lady sitting on the front steps with the door open. That door does not open, so there is only one door. We did not see a fire alarm. We found alternative accommodation.

    Owner/manager responds:

We are sorry this guest seems disgruntled and negative. Other feedbacks at the same time tell a different story. This family cottage is fairly unique, essentially unmodified from the 1920’s, and keeping the price low by working on a self-service basis has allowed many families a holiday at this National Park. It is not perfect and there is plenty of alternative accommodation. There is a smoke alarm in the living room and we have asked a local builder to check the sunroom doors.

This bach is a step back in time to a real bach - not posh, but rustic and charming, and comfy. The front room is a nice sun trap in the morning. It's well-equipped and has plenty of hot water and heating if you need it. The location is great - there's a birdsong chorus in the surrounding trees to start the day, DOC is right close by and it's a very short walk down to the lake front. Great value for money - I'd happily stay here again. I think the only thing it could do with is a washing machine
