Uncle Bill's Cottage is a gorgeous country home on a sheep and beef farm in the Orautoha Valley. Originally the home of one of the valley's earliest pioneers, it has been beautifully restored while keeping its history and character. It is a great base for disconnecting and enjoying a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of life.

It’s the perfect spot for a holiday with friends or family – away from the cares of the world, but close to all the attractions the Ruapehu region is famous for. We are only 20 minutes from the base of Mt Ruapehu (Turoa Skifield) and 50 minutes from Whakapapa.

From the time you step in the door of this fully set up cottage you can relax. With plenty of quality linen supplied, and no cleaning to do at the end of your visit, all you have to do is enjoy yourself! The cottage is warm and inviting, cosy and comfortable.

Soak in the outdoor bath, under the stars, glass of wine in hand...or toast marshmallows over a warming fire down by the river - we supply the marshmallows!

There are plenty of farm activities for the children – helping to feed the horse, dogs and chickens; swimming or kayaking in your own private section of the river; feeding the eels; or riding a sled towed behind the quad bike. For the little ones there is a balance bike; a trike; a playground with swings and slide; a play hut; and even an old quad bike for all those imaginary adventures.

You can fish for rainbow and brown trout right in front of the cottage, with an adult’s and a child’s rod available for you to use. The Manganui O te Ao River, world-famous for its trout fishing, is just 5 minutes away.

With 14 mountain bike tracks to choose from in the region, you are spoiled for choice. We are right on the National Cycleway heading to The Bridge to Nowhere Track, which winds through the 'Valley of Abandoned Dreams' to the Whanganui River, with 35km of spectacular scenery and wild beauty.

Come and experience the perfect family country retreat!

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit .Fantastic cottage in lovely surroundings. Perfect set up for our 2 families and teen kids .Well stocked kitchen and extremely comfortable beds !! Loved the fact there are plenty of spaces to find a peaceful spot to relax either by the river or on the verandah . The outdoor bath was a nightly highlight as well as the open fire by the river and meeting the resident "pet" lamb ! Gordie very helpful in passing on trout fishing tips !

We had such a wonderful holiday ! Our kids loved feeding lambie, the hens, Dylan and the dogs. So many fantastic memories for them - catching an eel, tractor rides, outdoor bath, kayaking and toasting marshmallows. Very relaxing holiday for the adults reading and enjoying a glass of wine listening to the river. We also had amazing weather for the tongariro crossing. Huge thankyou to Jenny and Gordie who were the very warmest and welcoming and of hosts and for sharing your beautiful farm.

  • Perfect place to relax and enjoy simple pleasures

Perfect place to relax and enjoy simple pleasures. The bach is well appointed, comfortable and clean. We appreciated the little touches like fresh eggs, flowers and a delicious homemade berry jam. We enjoyed toasting marshmellows over the fire by the stream and handfeeding the eels. Our youngest daughter relished the opportunity to feed the farm animals including the dogs, lamb, and horse. Gordie and Jenny are wonderful hosts. Beautiful location with a fantastic swimming hole at the roads end.
