Uncle Bill's Cottage is a gorgeous country home on a sheep and beef farm in the Orautoha Valley. Originally the home of one of the valley's earliest pioneers, and has been restored to a high standard while keeping lots of its history and character. It is now the perfect base for a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of life.

From the time you step in the door of this fully set up cottage you can relax. With plenty of quality linen supplied, and no cleaning to do at the end of your visit, all you have to do is enjoy yourself! The cottage is warm and inviting, cosy and comfortable.

Picture yourself soaking in the outdoor bath, under the stars, glass of wine in hand...or toasting marshmallows over a warming fire down by the river.

It’s the perfect spot for a holiday with friends or family – away from the cares of the world, but close to all the attractions the Ruapehu region is famous for. We are only 25 minutes from the base of Mt Ruapehu (Turoa Skifield) and 50 minutes from Whakapapa.

You can fish for rainbow and brown trout right in front of the cottage, with a couple of rods available for you to use; or feed the eels in one of the pools. The Manganui O te Ao River, world-famous for its trout fishing, is just 5 minutes away.

There are plenty of farm activities for the children – helping to feed the horse, dogs and chickens; swimming or kayaking in your own private section of the river; feeding the eels; or riding a sled towed behind the quad bike. There is a playground with swings, a slide and a play hut for the little ones, along with a couple of kids’ bikes.

With 14 mountain bike tracks to choose from in the region, you are spoiled for choice. We are right on the National Cycleway heading to The Bridge to Nowhere Track, which winds through the 'Valley of Abandoned Dreams' to the Whanganui River, with 35km of spectacular scenery and wild beauty.

Come and experience the perfect retreat!

Perfect holiday destination for a family or two with young children. No need to travel anywhere. Lots to do on the property with the children and a very nice setting to relax in the evening while they are asleep :)

This was the most amazing family holiday we have had in a long time. Switched off the gadgets and got into farm life with the help of Geordie. We highly recommend it to families with little ones who need to get away from it all and enjoy the delights of the open air fire, feeding the dogs and herding the sheep. Thanks for an amazing stay!

Our 5th time back, we absolutely love this place! FDantastic for the kids to get away from the screens and experiencing farm life and board games. We absolutely love roasting mrashmallows at night sitting next to the river. The whole experience is one of relaxation and peacefulness. We'll definitely be back again !

We usually stay at Uncle Bills Cottage over the winter (which is amazing) - and this year we decided to do the Bridge to Nowhere over the summer so booked to stay at the cottage. We are not sure now if we enjoyed it more over the summer or in the winter. Swimming in the river, attempting to fish, the gardens in bloom, the kids getting down and dirty enjoying farm activities, etc - we had another great time here and can recommend staying here at any time of the year.
