Description

  • Meet some of the farm animals - feed the chickens and collect their eggs.
  • Relax and unwind in the secluded outdoor bath overlooking the river - such bliss!
  • Sit around the firepit under the stars, telling tall stories and toasting marshmallows...

Uncle Bill's Cottage is a gorgeous country home on a sheep and beef farm in the Orautoha Valley. Originally the home of one of the valley's earliest pioneers, and has been restored to a high standard while keeping lots of its history and character. It is now the perfect base for a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of life.

From the time you step in the door of this fully set up cottage you can relax. With plenty of quality linen supplied, and no cleaning to do at the end of your visit, all you have to do is enjoy yourself! The cottage is warm and inviting, cosy and comfortable.

Picture yourself soaking in the outdoor bath, under the stars, glass of wine in hand...or toasting marshmallows over a warming fire down by the river.

It’s the perfect spot for a holiday with friends or family – away from the cares of the world, but close to all the attractions the Ruapehu region is famous for. We are only 25 minutes from the base of Mt Ruapehu (Turoa Skifield) and 50 minutes from Whakapapa.

You can fish for rainbow and brown trout right in front of the cottage, with a couple of rods available for you to use; or feed the eels in one of the pools. The Manganui O te Ao River, world-famous for its trout fishing, is just 5 minutes away.

There are plenty of farm activities for the children – helping to feed the horse, dogs and chickens; swimming or kayaking in your own private section of the river; feeding the eels; or riding a sled towed behind the quad bike. There is a playground with swings, a slide and a play hut for the little ones, along with a couple of kids’ bikes.

With 14 mountain bike tracks to choose from in the region, you are spoiled for choice. We are right on the National Cycleway heading to The Bridge to Nowhere Track, which winds through the 'Valley of Abandoned Dreams' to the Whanganui River, with 35km of spectacular scenery and wild beauty.

Come and experience the perfect retreat!

  • A real slice of paradise in a lovely rural setting

A real slice of paradise in a lovely rural setting. Our kids had so much fun feeding the eels, collecting fresh eegs giving the farm dogs breakfast and dinner. I would highly recommend this place and Jenny and Gordie that run the show are pure gold. My family look forward to our next visit.

A wonderful place to escape to. Well set up with everything we needed, and many more thoughtful extras. Jenny and Gordie made us feel very welcome, and delighted our children by including them in farm tasks.

Our second visit and we loved it even more than the last time. Fantastic cottage and Jenny and Gordie are so great and helpful and very very friendly. The mountain was closed, so no skiing but we still had a perfect holiday, which included feeding the lambs! Priceless. We will be back :)
