Once the home of the Opunake Harbourmaster during the 1930s this house sits on the headlands overlooking the South Taranaki coastline with Opunake Beach and Middleton Bay Beach less than 2 minutes walk in either direction. World class surf breaks can be seen to the south and a safe boat ramp is situated in Middleton Bay to the north. The town which has a supermarket, two pubs, surf shop and and more than one award winning cafe (amongst other things) is a 10 minute stroll along Pohutukawa covered cliffs. The house has recently been upgraded with two new bathrooms and dining room to make the most of the sea views and evening sunsets.

  • Property was filthy, requires deep cleaning...

Property was filthy, requires deep cleaning. One bedroom stank of urine. Duvet inner stained. Work prep surface in kitchen not even wiped down. Flies everywhere. Major health hazards: 1) firewood was old painted wood with potential lead contamination; 2) hot water cylinder temp too low to deal with Legionella, so could cause a fatal infection. If you value normal cleanliness standards and safe lodgings, you might not like this property. Nice location, spacious.

    Owner/manager responds:

These guests stay 3 nights but no call/txts were received regarding these issues? a plumber has checked the water temp and it is fine?! Summer was hot flies are a problem everywhere in Taranaki, a small amount of wood is painted most is not I will pullout and dump the painted wood. We have a low rate because you bring your own linen and clean up when you leave I check/clean regularly but to clean after every guest would mean increasing the nightly rate. We have since done another spring clean.

  • Beautiful setting looking our to sea from the living area and decks

Beautiful setting looking our to sea from the living area and decks. Loved the large tables both inside and outside for family chatting. Very handy to beach and walkways - a totally relaxing place to stay. We enjoyed exploring Opunake with our family and will definitely be back to The Harbourmasters Cottage.

  • Arrived during the big storm that hit

Arrived during the big storm that hit. Glad to be inside and off the motorbikes. Nice place with most things provided. Great view and close to the sea. Nice to stay somewhere with a bit of history.

  • A place with character

A place with character. You do get a sense that many lives have been lived out in this house. But it is not a museum, for it has all the modcons we expect of a c21st house. We had a three very good days stay. Opunake has particular charms; a great swimming beach, Mt Taranaki looming over the town, Everybodys cinema (one of the best in NZ)*, and extraordinarily good fish and chips. * which features in ‘The Reel People of New Zealand’, screening on Sky Arts channel in March 2018.
