Description

Historic Pilot's Cottage nestled in the dunes of Aramoana Spit between the ocean beach and the tidal flats.

Experience wide ever-changing skies and a landscape where the tides and the sealions rule.

Collect cockles and mussels at low tide. Enjoy being stranded at high tide.

Watch albatrosses, godwits, herons, and yellow-eyed penguins coming in at dusk.

Fish from The Mole, kayak to Te Ngaru and surf at Lion's Rock. Wave at the cruise ships going by, then come inside and hole up by the open fire.

Only 15 mins from the shops and cafes of Port Chalmers and 30 mins from Dunedin.

Safe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand:

Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand!

Edna St. Vincent Millay.

  • We loved staying in the house for four nights

We loved staying in the house for four nights. The road was impossible for our heavy loaded small rental car. The steep potholes where full with rainwater. But that was not effecting our stay. We just walked the ten minutes to the house. Nice reception with fresh flowers! We saw the large sealion and even on a early morning two killer whales.

  • Truly magical spot, house was bright and quirky and comfortable

Truly magical spot, house was bright and quirky and comfortable. Paradise for kids with toys and games and of course the beach. We read late in our stay to keep off the dunes around the house as much as possible, unfortunately kids had at this point spent days jumping in them, sorry! A wild part of the country to explore with a cozy, warm house to return to at the end of the day. Highly recommend.

This home and it's environment is simply a character from a wonderous fairy tale. A beloved house with an orange back door dwelling inside a sand dune ring of magical protection. Sea lions and their wives stand guard. And then you realise you have stepped inside an art work, drinking cups of tea from cups made by a magician. To be there in a beautiful French dress, walking the sea shore, trending the fire, I felt like I'd found a home.

  • Love this location

Love this location. Gorgeous secluded beach where you can watch the ships sail in to Port Chalmers. Short drive to the city. We have stayed there twice and enjoyed our stay both times. The bach itself is very quaint and has most of the things needed. The log fires were great. Mattresses on single beds need replacing. Dirt road to bach difficult. Overall great stay, good value for money.
