Bach or holiday home | Ilam | #8894
Gorgeous – a little metro, a little retro, and exquisitely furnished with a sprinkling of contemporary art, books and music by Cantabrians. Basking in sunshine all day it exudes warmth and personality with two living rooms, kitchen with Rimu floor, and French doors to a terrace. It is insulated and truly warm in winter and summer with encompassing heating (no draughty heat pumps).
The terrace overlooks our tennis court and garden designed by Marion Morris and guests are welcome to enjoy it. The bedrooms have five star hotel king beds (2nd can split into 2 singles), chic linen, and a selection of plump pillows. The bathroom and separate laundry each have a loo. The location is very quiet and the house is fenced and private and has a security alarm. The house sailed serenely through the 4 Sept 2010, February, June and December earthquakes.
Solway House is beautifully situated to walk to the University through the lovely Azalea and Rhododendrons of the Ilam Gardens. The College of Education is two minutes away, shops are around the corner, and it’s seven minutes by car to the airport and 12 minutes to the city. Two different bus routes to the city pass the University, Westfield Mall and the Christchurch Hospital and are within a stone’s throw. The Orbiter can be caught in Waimairi Road about five minutes walk away.
Many of the city's attractions are in the North West so the house is ideally situated for the Antarctic Centre, Airforce World, Willowbank, Orana Park, Mona Vale, the Riccarton Market, Dean's Bush and the Farmers' Market, Bush Inn shopping centre and cafes and the Avonhead shopping centre and cafes. Tennis courts, bowling greens, swimming pools and golf courses all close by.
All visitors are given my personal guide, updated since the earthquakes to Christchurch which has our favourite places, restaurants and cafe, restaurants, shops and things to do not found in the guide books. We look forward to having you here.

This is such an awesome, super clean and cosy house (winter/spring). I highly recommend it as a place to stay and relax. The owners have thought of everything you'd need, and its right there at 'home'. Also great location near the Uni, and handy shops just around the block. I am so coming to ask to stay the next time I go to CHCH. Definitely a lovely place, really homely, with a touch of retro class.
Solway House is a lovely little place in a very convenient location. It is furnished to an extremely high level of comfort , facilities and style. It is light and sunny and just a joy to arrive to and relax in. Thank You to Claire and John (-:
We are pleased you liked the house and the art and we enjoyed seeing you relax on the terrace with a glass of wine on your first day. We always like seeing guests use the tennis court and delighted we turned on such good weather for you! Thank you both for leaving the house so well, it was easy to turn around for our family following you.
Delightful and well equipped house. Beautiful fresh flowers and very comfortable beds. The children loved playing on the tennis court and being invited to pick more flowers. Host very kind and informative about local walks in this leafy area along the local stream.
We enjoyed having this interesting family from Brisbane so much and hope they will return some time. It gave us a lot of pleasure seeing the children enjoy the grass tennis court and our garden. They were very careful and considerate guests and left the house as they found it which we appreciated very much.
