Description

The cottage is a self contained cottage used by the woodcutters back in the days when our barn was a saw mill. We enjoyed it for holidays during the years when our children were young - they could dam the stream, fish for eels, catch fresh water crayfish in the evenings. Lighting in the evening is by candle light and gas light. No TV, no computers, no noise! It is a peaceful haven and we loved being there. There is a large lawn out the front for playing petanque or croquet, and a long drop toilet sheltered by banana palms at the back.

There is a neat kitchen with a gas hob, although most of our evening meals were cooked outside on the barbeque. The fridge is a very small 42L camping fridge, so bring a chilly bin if needed. There is ice available at the local dairy.

You can lie out under the stars in the evening, and count the satellites going past. There are tuis, woodpigeons, kingfisher, pheasants, quail, and even wild peacocks ... this place is a small paradise.

Please note that we DO NOT allow pets - we have peacocks, and two pekin ducks who would be displeased with any four legged creatures in their space.

Special conditions:

Very young children would need to be closely supervised due to the adjacent stream.

NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave; Bring your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels);

    What a gem of a place! We had a fantastic time and will definitely be back. Our kids, aged 7, 8 and 9, loved bike riding, bush walks, collecting peacock feathers and generally exploring...even the new forestry road being made added to their excitement. Plenty to occupy our mornings with at the cottage, with our afternoons spent at the nearby beach. Just make sure you take the insect repellant for the evening mozzies! Great time. A+++

    What a fantastic place to stay!! If you are looking for "The Ritz" or something fancy then this is probably not the place for you. If however, you are looking for something gorgeous, private, homely, romantic and set in the most beautiful surrounding ever then keep reading. It was a perfect size for our family of 5, the kids were bunked in next to us, lighting candles at night and feeding the peacocks was a highlight and the beach is gorgeous. This definitely won't be the last time we stay!!

  • We absolutely loved staying at the cottage

    We absolutely loved staying at the cottage. It is in a beautiful location, a short drive from a safe surf beach, which has some shade available from Pohutakawa trees. If you want to holiday in an idyllic, completely private setting with many places to explore, and you don't want anything fancy or suburban, this is the perfect place. We are really keen to return some time.

    Great place to get away from it all and back to basics; was even able to cook scones in the BBQ. Very peaceful, nice to hear the moreporks calling from early evening. Bicycles are a great way to get around Oakura.
