The Sanctuary Retreat Holiday Cottages offers you modern clean accommodation in a tranquil setting. Situated on the tourist route between Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson Kauri Park, it is the ideal place to stay. You will easily find us in the historic village of Donnellys Crossing.

Wake up to birdsong and the babble of a nearby brook. Take in the picturesque sunsets and the vista of surrounding hills and forest. During the day, enjoy the many nearby activities. A hidden cycle track known to locals is minutes from your accommodation. Just up the road is Trounson Kauri Park with its well manicured walkways, audio stories of the park and visual displays to give you an understanding of the mighty Kauri trees that inhabit the area.

Waipoua forest with famous Tane Mahuta, the areas oldest kauri, is just a few minutes away by car. Borrow The Sanctuary's kayak and head for a glorious day at Kai Iwi Lakes. Take a short trip out to our wonderful west coast beaches. Climb to the top of Maunganui Bluff for breath taking views of the ocean or Motor bike/4 wheel drive from Baylys Beach or Glinks Gully to Pouto.

You can make The Sanctuary Holiday Cottages your base and enjoy day trips ranging in time from 20 to 45 minutes to places like Opononi (former home of Opo the dolphin), Omapere or the Hokianga harbour. Take the rarely travelled scenic route direct from The Sanctuary to Kaikohe and visit Ngawha Springs in just over an hour. You may choose to spend a day enjoying the history of Dargaville, visiting the Lighthouse museum, the Kumura Box or just wandering through a NZ town that takes you a step back in time. There are numerous walk ways just minutes from our doorstep if you are keen on out door exercise.

At night you may wish to meander along the road and explore the glow worms or take a torch and go on a kiwi walk at Trounson Kauri Park. Then again you may just want to kick back and enjoy our onsite sauna. The choices are numerous.

Special conditions: No Drugs or Alcohol on site. Pets may be allowed, please inquire. Adventure tower must be monitored when in use by an adult over 18 years. No climbing on outside of tower.

  • Nice place to stay! We've got a great family time

Nice place to stay! We've got a great family time. There's tennis court and playground on the property - we used it a lot. Trounson Kauri Park just 3 km from the property - if you're lucky, you can spot some kiwis at night! No mobile range, so nobody will interrupt your holidays :)

  • The house is fine (tidy and clean)

The house is fine (tidy and clean). You arrive to the "sanctuary and bible training school" the bach is situated next to a converted old school which houses most of the amenities listed. (we had no access to this). Some small things could improve the bach, like info on the local area and things to do, as there is no cell reception in the area. The bach sleeps 8 yet there were only 3 drinking glasses!

    Owner/manager responds:

The Cottage is situated just out of cell phone range. Coverage is available just up the road at Tounson Kauri Park. Caretaker has been notified to replace the broken glasses. Manager was offsite during guests stay and guest did not have access to Sauna, highchair and dryer. A refund of 5% of tariff has already been made prior to feedback. All guests are supplied with managers contact details when they are not on premises so that caretaker can be contacted to assist. Appreciate suggestions.
