Description

Just ten minutes drive from the centre of Invercargill, our crib is a cosy 1930’s cottage with beachside charm, part of a small settlement nestled in the sandhills of Oreti Beach on Foveaux Strait. the simple sprit of a NZ bach is here. City convenience is close, yet the atmosphere is quiet and isolated. A view of bushy Stewart island and sandhills graces the kitchen and the sound of the surf will whoosh you off to sleep at night.

A short walk through the sand hills takes you right on to the beach, broadening to a huge expanse of sand at low tide, stretching for miles around to Riverton. Great to mountain bike, just walk, beachcomb or even drive your car. The surf is enjoyed by surfers, swimmers, paddlers, kite surfers and windsurfers. Otatara cafes and bars (Ziffs and The Cabbage Tree) are handy, as is Otatara Golf Course and particularly close, a golfer's gem; Oreti Sands 18-hole golf links (southernmost links course on the planet!).

The Bluff Oyster festival in May offers great food and music, or try the Burt Munro Challenge (November) for unique motorbike races . If you're in travel mode, the Coronet Peak and Remarkables skifields, lakes, adventure activities and stunning scenery of Fiordland National Park, Te Anau and Queenstown are only 2 hours drive away, flights to beautiful Rakiura / Stewart Island leave from the local airport and you are right on the "Southern Scenic Route" if touring the lovely South Coast and Catlins. Less energetically, you might just prefer to watch the sun set into the ocean from the sandhill seat or relax by the woodburner with a hot cuppa and a good book!

Accommodates four comfortably but can sleep extras on fold out beds in the living room.

Winter time; longer term rental deals negotiable, please enquire.

If you are travelling to Milford Sound or elsewhere in Fiordland, you may also like to stay at our other listing in Te Anau (Bookabach no. 20335, Mountaineer Chalet).

  • Wow, what a wonderful bach and location

Wow, what a wonderful bach and location. We arrived at night and immediately built a fire. We were all so cozy and warm, the 5 of us sat around and happily read in the glow of a clearly happy home. This is one of those places with tons of character and charm. My husband didn't want to leave in the morning--the home exudes a great charm. It is not fancy, but there is nothing more you need and the decorative touches were wonderful.

  • I loved the real Kiwiana alternative feel of this bach

I loved the real Kiwiana alternative feel of this bach. Kindling and firewood pre-chopped, fabulous. A few little herbs in the garden, and at first I was horrified that there was no television, but what a great thing in the end. Made for compulsory private communication time for us. Most excellent, Thanks a million. Kaz and Dutchy, Mt Tamborine Queensland Australia.
