DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO VILLA AMALIA FROM CHANIA AIRPORT
On leaving the airport, pass the Shell gas station on your right and take the first left (sign posted “Chania”).
Follow the road to the end (approx. 2.5 km) and at the roundabout, turn right.
Keep straight on this road, past the villages of Aroni and Pithari till you hit the roundabout. Carefully take the left, sign posted “Souda” and “Rethymnon” (the right leads to Chania).
Follow this road all the way down the hillside. As you reach the bottom of the hill, go past a Shell petrol station on your left and follow the road straight to Souda until the traffic lights.
At the lights (IN.KA supermarket on right), turn right, drive approx. 300m and then turn left, following the sign “Rethymnon”. This road leads to the highway (Greeks call it “National Road”) after 500m. Keep in the left lane, go under the highway bridge and take the sliproad left onto the highway. Drive towards Rethymnon for approximately 6km and you will see the “Aptera” sign on the left. Pass the exit and continue straight on the highway about 500m more, then look for a large metal wheelie-bin on your right. Turn right here on the paved, steep, uphill road. After 500m, you will see 2 identical villas. Pass the upper villa, turn left for 20m and you will find the gate for villa Amalia which is the lower of the two. Parking is in front of its main entrance, just past the pool area.

Perfect location for local beaches and exploring Chania
About 30 minutes from Chania airport, the villa is located on the south side of the bay, overlooking the water. Split on three levels, the lower level is a self contained area with its own veranda and kitchen - ideal for teenagers who want to hang out, away from the adults. Great views from the upper deck, and a good sized salt-water pool (tear-drop salty, not sea salty). The villa is well stocked and well maintained with gardeners and pool people coming weekly to keep things in order. The nearby village of Aptera has a couple of tavernas, if you want to stay local. Or you can drive down to the local beaches for on-the beach dining at Kiani and Kalyves (Almi restaurant). Kalami Parking, across the main road, is friendly and good for breakfast. For fine dining, a trip into Chania is worth the effort. We can recommend AstreaGarden and Kariatis. Bohéme good for breakfast. My lasting memory will be the early morning and late evening sea swimming off the jetty at Kalami beach and Kalyves beach. Glorious.

Cretian Retreat
Just above the north Crete road 90, sits the Villa Amalia overlooking Souda Bay. You reach it using a quiet narrow road about 500 metres from the road to the nearby village of Aptera. Look for the blue and yellow recycling bins at the edge of the road. Villa Amalia is a lovely spacious villa with ceramic floors and stained glass inserts in every door. Light floods in from huge windows on almost every wall. Stairs lead to two second floor bedrooms, one a master with a queen bed and ensuite with shower, the second bedroom with two single beds and a separate bathroom with a bath and hand held shower. A large patio with lovely views is accessible from both bedrooms. The main floor has a small living area backed by a dining area and a large kitchen with another eating area. A large patio is accessed from the kitchen leading to the very clean, but unheated pool and descends to a bbq area. Charcoal is not provided, but can be purchased at one of the large grocery stores (We went to chalkadakis )in Chania, which is 12 minutes away by car. Kitchen is adequately equipped with most necessities. Do not be fooled by the jar labeled sugar, it is in fact salt! Appliances worked well, although we never figured out how to properly run the washer and dryers. There are two washers, one in the second floor bathroom and one in the basement. There is one dryer in the basement, which we couldn’t figure out either. In fact the basement is an apartment unto itself with its own bedroom, living area, kitchen, and bathroom. Overall, the Villa is a very clean and well maintained place in the hills of Aptera. As mentioned by others, you will need a car, even though the small village of Aptera can be walked to, if necessary. The archeological site of Aptera needs to be driven to, but it is well worth the drive and the small entrance fee of 7 euros for adults. Stavros is an attentive and entertaining host, who cares about the comfort of his guests and goes above and beyond. He is easily contacted as he lives in an identical villa above Villa Amalia. We would not hesitate to stay here again when visiting north western Crete.

Chania 2022
The villa is immaculate and well equipped and Stavros, the owner, lives next door and makes sure everything is ok. It’s perfect for both a group of adults and children. It’s a quiet location, the pool is great and set in a nice garden and there is an outdoor kitchen and table tennis table. Pretty easy access to Chania ( 25 mins) and the nearby village of Aptera has a small mini mart and a cluster of nice tavernas. Car hire is essential as the villa is up a steep road off the National Main road. Stupendous views over the bay of Souda
