About this property

Renovated Medieval House in Charming Provencal Village

The Non-Smoking house is a traditional 'maison de village' and the foundation dates back to medieval times. The interior of the house combines traditional style with modern amenities. This house comprises five rooms and three bathrooms (one on each floor): the modern kitchen/dining room and bathroom (with no shower or tub) as well as glass doors to the terrasse on the top floor, and the full bathrooms with toilet, sink and shower and the master bedroom with a double bed and hall/office on the entry floor, and a second bedroom with a double bed downstairs as well as an intermediate bedroom with a single bed and powder room on the lower level, as well as the comfortable queen sofa bed in the living room upstairs which opens out onto large terrace upstairs (shared when the house next door is occupied, but with separate tables chairs and drying racks for each house). The house sleeps five comfortably, 6 adults and one infant in a pinch. We have a bed and highchair for a baby/toddler. The main room features a dishwasher, clothes washer, kitchen counter, dining room table, six chairs and easy chairs. A modern gas stove and North American-style refrigerator complete these rooms. The lower double bedroom in the house is centuries old and even incorporates a Roman tile and beautiful double vaulted ceiling! But note that the stairs to the lower bedrooms are rather steep.
Puyloubier is the perfect base to explore Provence and the Cote D'Azur. Our house is less than an hour from beaches and seaside villages, 20 min. from the beautiful cultural hub of Aix en Provence, close to countless vineyards, hilltop villages and hiking trails and cycling routes, and 40 minutes from the lively metropolis of Marseille. It benefits from the spectacular scenery and quiet atmosphere of a village on the side of one of the most picturesque mountains in France, without sacrificing access to cultural, outdoors, gastronomic and other attractions.
Nestled at the foot of Mont. Ste. Victoire, 20 kilometers east of Aix-en-Provence is the picturesque village of Puyloubier. It is just large enough to sustain a grocery store, children's playground and sports fields, primary school, post office, cafe, restaurant, bakery, and variety store, and is home to the award-winning local Cave Cooperative, selling wonderful and very inexpensive wine. From the house, visitors can walk up the mountain immortalized in the paintings of Paul Cezanne.
Puyloubier is close to amenities of every kind, from Mediterranean Beaches to the cultural, market and shopping activities in Aix en Provence and Nice. The region is rich in cultural and outdoors activities, hosting many galleries, music festivals and theatres, as well as being a centre for hiking, mountaineering, cycling, and swimming. There are several children's amusement parks and adventure playgrounds, as well as beaches and pools for children of all ages. Historical and religious sites of interest abound locally, but perhaps most arresting are the beautiful landscapes which have attracted artists from Van Gogh and Picasso to the Canadian Group of Seven, who stayed in a house a few miles away.

Vacation in Puyloubier

We appreciated the well appointed kitchen and adjacent outside deck. Great location for us to explore the beautiful region. Several local restaurants and vineyards were excellent. We loved the setting and Eric was friendly and helpful even when we arrived quite late. The setting on the mountain meant lots of walking, narrow hilly streets and many stairs. We enjoyed our stay for sure!

Lovely property in a beautiful location

We stayed in this well-designed and equipped home for over a month and really enjoyed ourselves! The home itself has modern furnishings but retains the old character of the building. The layout is very thoughtful with a living area/kitchen on the top floor, with lots of light and views of the village. Puyloubier is a beautiful small village, with everything we needed although Aix is very close by as well. We had a great time going for walks and hikes, studying the view and taking advantage of the excellent local wines. We look forward to returning!

Great Provence Experience

We enjoyed being within driving distance to spectacular cities and villages rich in historic significance. Mont Saint Victoire is a magnet for hikers and cyclists and there's no shortage of either. The village has nice wines available at the co-op. Restaurants are an issue on Mondays and Tuesdays, you have to be prepared by visiting Carrefour for those days. Overall, a pretty spectacular experience. The property manager, Eric is awesome as well.

Wonderful memories

Rue de la Paix house in Puyloubier We have wonderful memories of this great place to stay in a charming town in the South of France. We spent a week in September at this very convenient but still somewhat rustic and authentic home in an ancient village surrounded by vineyards and Mt. St. Victoire. Rue de la Paix house is very nice, clean and comfortable and above all, the location is breathtaking. The home was very welcoming, had everything you could possibly need, i.e. a well-stocked kitchen and a bathroom on every floor. The beds were comfortable and the home was clean and had plenty of room. We found everything we needed (and more) for example lots of maps and guide books to help us orient ourselves. We used the terrace off the kitchen for star-lit dinners, delicious lunches of cheeses and wines bought locally and in the morning for coffee and croissants from a daily selection of fresh goodies at the “Festival de Paine” bakery just around the corner. The sight seeing was superb. Lots of great hiking right from the front door and short trips to taste wine at literally hundreds of nearby wineries. We had day trips to Nice, the Saturday outdoor market in Aix and lovely quiet beaches on the coast. We loved visiting the exciting calanques (fiords) found on the Mediterranean coast between Marseilles and Nice. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for an especially genuine South of France experience. My family and I had a wonderful time at this home and we'd love to come back sometime.

The house was nice, the village lovely. We are a short family of almost all adults who are physically able. Tall people or elderly or families with little children would find it more difficult.Thehouse has all you needs

Lovely house in a beautiful setting! All the mod cons you could wish for but with character as well

We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay in this lovely house in Puyloubier, in a beautiful setting, right underneath Mount Ste Victoire. Fantastic views all around. It was exceptionally hot during our stay so we did flag a bit but in a sense, this did add to the feeling of having got away from it all for our break. The house had everything we needed and was very homely. Meals out on the terrace were a highlight and once the sun had gone down, we could lie down and stargaze as very little light pollution. Eric and Melina on hand if any queries (we didn't really have any!) and David next door was extremely kind and helpful. Plenty to do - we ran out of time for everything - but highlights were trips to Le Ciotat and Cassis on the coast plus boat trip to the Calanques; a visit to Aix with the very hairy bus ride home (!); looking around the basilica and convent in St. Maximim-La-Ste-Baume; and just wondering around the streets of Puyloubier with some thing different around each corner, including the trip to the bakery each morning! Now back home and feeling very relaxed. (Would have felt more relaxed had the French drivers not been in quite so much of a hurry everywhere!) Thank you Beth for opening up your wonderful home and 'sharing' this delightful part of France with us.

A perfect blend of authentic charm and modern comfort

This lovely old village house has been beautifully restored without losing its traditional feel and features. Putting the kitchen on the top floor, from where you can walk straight out to the roof terrace, was a master stroke that opens the house up to the light, air and views. We've stayed twice, sleeping once in the very comfortable sofa-bed on the top floor, and the other time in an equally comfortable double bedroom on a lower floor. The kitchen is modern and well-equipped and all the facilities (including a great shower room, plus toilet and wash basin on every floor) were clean and well-maintained. Puyloubier has an amazingly vibrant cultural life for such a small town. Our visit coincided with the Aix Festival, which has events not only in Aix itself but in many surrounding towns, villages and chateaux. Puyloubier is well placed for visits to Aix, Marseille and the calanques, the breathtaking hiking tracks of Mont Ste Victoire, and a wealth of local vineyards and farms selling local produce.

We are a retired couple who love the south of France, and travel here regularly from our base in Toronto, Canada.

Why they chose this property

This village is the ideal location in southern france, and benefits from a vibrant civic life, with 120 local clubs and activities, including films, music and theatrical events throughout the year. We love the local wine, restaurants, hikes and most of all the scenery, which is spectacular throughout the year.

What makes this property unique

The views from the terrasse are wonderful, and the sunsets spectacular. We love the peace and quiet, and the proximity to transit, hiking and great food, culture, wine and restaurants.
