About this property

Candlemaker's Cottage - sleeps 6 guests in 3 bedrooms

This handsome, Grade II listed, Regency period house is in the central part of Marshfield's historic High Street. The imposing roadside facade hides the charming and stylish interior, making the entrance all the more enchanting for guests as they step inside.

Candlemaker's Cottage was originally a dairy farm owned by many generations of the same family. The current owner has created a delightful home that's beautifully decorated and furnished, creating a stylish and cosy ambience while preserving its character and unique Georgian features. Downstairs is a kitchen-breakfast room, with an Aga, a dining room, living room, utility room/cloakroom, and a door out to the garden and the Garden Room, with a wet room. Upstairs are three spacious and light bedrooms (one king-size, one standard double, and one twin) and a family bathroom, with a hidden washbasin in one of the double bedrooms. One dog is accepted.

At the rear of the cottage, accessed through the breakfast room or hallway, is a delightful courtyard garden, lawn, and Garden Room. The courtyard has a raised central pond (covered for safety) and pergola with roses and clematis. A sofa, seats and table, and BBQ are provided for guests to enjoy this beautiful space. The courtyard leads to a well (covered) and very pretty, enclosed lawn with a lavender bed, planted borders, a bench, and a hidden seating area behind the Garden Room. The Garden Room (with shower and WC) can be used as a work area, summer sitting room, or mini gym.

*Dogs: 1 well-behaved dog welcome at the cottage at an additional cost each. Please let us know if you will be bringing a dog and we will then revise your booking confirmation. The pet fee is NOT included in your booking fee. A request for an additional fee per pet will be sent to you after you have placed your booking. Your pet fee must be paid for before your arrival date.

Ground Floor
Entrance Hall:
Step through the original, wide front door and portico into a long hallway with original flagstone flooring and a large, antique dresser full of handy items for guests' use.

Inner Hallway & Utility Room/W.C:
At the far end of the entrance hall is an ornate door opening into an inner hallway where guests will find hooks for coats and plenty of room to keep shoes and boots. A door opens from the inner hallway into the Utility Room where there is a toilet, washing machine, ceiling clothes drying rack, iron, ironing board, and vacuum. Another door opens to the courtyard garden, which leads to the Garden Room/Wet Room and lawn.

Kitchen + Breakfast Room:
This is a lovely room in two parts, with the first the cosy breakfast room furnished with a bespoke wooden table with seating for six, an Aga, and a butcher's block table on wheels. French windows open onto the courtyard with a view all the way across to the Garden Room and the lawn beyond. The second part, through an arch, is a small, but fully equipped, contemporary kitchen with hand-built storage units, a stone sink overlooking the courtyard, preparation surfaces, a microwave, a fridge-freezer and all the crockery, glassware, and utensils you need for a self-catering retreat. Notice the ancient hooks in the ceiling – this part of the kitchen would have been a pantry, with the hooks used for hanging meat and game.

The kitchen and hallway feature the original flagstone flooring, dating back hundreds of years – it can be chilly on bare feet, which is lovely in the summer, but guests may like to bring slippers for the cooler months. From here on, Candlemaker's Cottage is carpeted.

Dining Room:
Overlooking the front of the house, this elegant room, with its intriguing wallpaper made from genuine pages of an edition of The Times newspaper dated 1891, features a long dining table and six chairs, with shelves displaying books and beautiful glassware.

Living Room:
This gorgeous room is furnished in an elegant, country house style, with two sofas and an armchair, antique occasional tables with reading lamps and an antique chest-cum-coffee table set in front of the wood-burning stove. A smart TV stands in a corner to the side of the fireplace. The original Georgian cupboards to either side of the fireplace provide storage for a choice of family games.
First Floor

Head up the carpeted staircase with a rope handrail (passing a mezzanine floor with an antique travel chest and window), to the three bedrooms and family bathroom. (See Points of Note regarding the stairs and mezzanine.)

Bedroom One:
The first bedroom at the top of the stairs is a pretty, twin room overlooking the High Street. It is furnished with two 2'6” single beds*, bedside drawers and reading lamps, a chest of drawers and a delicate, Georgian, glass-fronted, double wardrobe. ((*On request, the bases can be bolted together to create a king-size double bed.)

Landing:
The landing has a mention of its own as it's a beautiful, light area with a lovely, antique chair placed under the window, making it the perfect spot to retreat to for a quiet read. It's also a big enough space for older children to sprawl out and relax or for guests to practice a bit of yoga during their stay!

Family Bathroom:

The bathroom overlooks the courtyard and garden and has a quirky, seaside theme with a large collection of shells and a large, shell-framed mirror. The bathroom is fitted with a full-size bath and over-bath shower, a toilet, and washbasin.

Note: There is a small step up from the landing to the Master Bedroom and Bedroom Three. Tall guests should be aware of the low lintel height as they step up.

Master Bedroom Two:

The generously sized Master Bedroom overlooks Marshfield's High Street and features a soothing silver-grey colour scheme. It is furnished with a king-size double bed with a button-back headboard, bedside tables, and reading lamps. In addition, there is a chest of drawers (with a hairdryer), a day chair, and hooks with hangers to hang clothes.

Bedroom Three:
This delightful double bedroom is decorated in a Regency style befitting of its age and has a wonderful view over the courtyard and onto the lawned garden and countryside beyond. It is furnished with a standard double bed with bedside shelves and adjustable wall-mounted reading lamps. This bedroom has a very handy, hidden feature: inside the centre of the three-door fitted wardrobe is a washbasin with a mirror and light.

To preserve the Georgian look of the buildings along Marshfield's ancient High Street, all the properties have shutters on their front-facing rooms instead of curtains. At Candlemaker's Cottage, this includes the dining room, living room, and bedrooms one and two. They are there for you to use, but please open and close carefully.
Outside
Garden Room & Wet Room:
From either the rear hallway or the Breakfast Room head across the courtyard to the delightful Garden Room. The room is furnished with a small desk, chair, lamp and has a WiFi connection (from the main house), so can be used as an office/workspace. It also has some hand weights and space to place a gym mat on the floor, so can be used for a workout. The rear French windows open onto a small seating area with a bistro-style table and two chairs, while at the entrance is the Wet Room with a shower, toilet, and hand basin. (The Garden Room has two electric radiators. These can be turned on by guests as and when the room is needed.)

The Courtyard & Garden:
Candlemaker's Cottage has a fabulous, south-facing courtyard and garden. In the late spring and summer, this really is the property's centrepiece - when the pergola's roses and clematis are in full bloom and the lavender bed is buzzing with bees and giving off a heady aroma. The courtyard has a raised central pond (with safety cover) from where the sound of bubbling water can be heard. Guests are provided with an outdoor seating set with two sofas, four stools, a table, and a brick-built charcoal BBQ. The courtyard leads to a gate through which is a well (covered) and a fully enclosed lawn with a lavender bed, pretty borders, a bench, and a hidden seating area behind the Garden Room.

8/10 Good

Linda I.

A lovely quirky and cosy cottage.
A lovely cottage in the centre of the village. On the 'main road' of Marshfield, but a very quiet road with little traffic. Easy walk to two pubs and the village shop and access to unlimited number of beautiful countryside walks. Location excellent as near to two superb National Trust properties and close to Bath. The house was very comfortable and cosy. Beautifully decorated. We enjoyed cooking on the Aga, and although the kitchen was very quirky it was well equipped and worked well for a holiday cottage. Lovely outside area, however, we did not get to enjoy this being that our stay was over New Year and it rained for pretty much all of the time! We felt if the bathroom was updated we would give this property a 5* rating all round.

Cosy home in a Delightful village
We - three couples - thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Candlemakers Cottage. It was so warm and cosy, spotless and well equipped. Communication with the owner was excellent, very quick to respond to a couple of queries. But to be honest, we were provided with very comprehensive information about the cottage and instructions for household items - including the Aga, as well as guides to the area and walks. We enjoyed a very pleasant meal at the friendly, nearby pub, the Catherine Wheel as well as morning coffee at the Tea rooms in the village. The Country Stores in Marshfield (only a hop away) are worth visiting - well stocked with everyday items as well as delicious treats. Another store, Vintage and Brown - definitely worth a visit. There is also a post office and another pub in the village and a wonderful looking garage. Marshfield is a lovely village which has a friendly, community feel and some very nice walks. We even met pigs and wallabies...yes, wallabies. Definitely would Recommend Candlemakers. Thank you to Louise.

4/10 Poor

Disappointing stay - won't be returning
I booked this cottage last October. My family and I have demanding jobs and were looking forward to a peaceful relaxing break, it would have been more peaceful to stay in the centre of Bath! We arrived on a boiling hot day and the aga was on so the kitchen was like a furnace. As advised in the details I called the owner (as she does not want guests to adjust the setting). We had to be quite forceful to persuade her to turn it off! To our horror roadworks started right in front of the property the next day at 8:30am and lasted until our last full day. The first evening, when we were about to go to bed my daughter found a half-dead dragonfly in her bed. When we got home, we were asked for our review. We contacted the owner first (attaching a photograph and a video of the noise levels) in the hope we would get a reasonable response and some compensation for our trip being ruined. She did not reply. We then got an email from Bolthole retreats saying they were sorry but they could not offer any compensation! We won't be returning. Also worth noting, the lounge and dining room are smaller and darker than they appear on the website and the owner states she lives in Marshfield but more accurately lives directly opposite the cottage.

10/10 Excellent

Candlemakers Cottage
Candlemakers cottage was absolutely perfect. The cottage was extremely well equipped with everything we needed for self catering, beds were comfortable, constant hot water and well laid out interior with a lounge and separate dining room. Although we only managed to sit outside a couple of times because of the weather the outside area was delightful and well equipped. The location was ideal for us to visit Bath, local villages and National Trust properties. Marshfield has a shop that has a wide range of goods. The Catherine Wheel pub serves the most amazing meals, the Sunday lunch was the best I’ve had. All in all a delightful holiday despite the weather.
