About this property

Home is Where the Hearth is, by Veeve

Cosy interiors, a garden terrace, and a covetable location in peaceful, picture-postcard Barnes, right by historic Hammersmith Bridge, means this family favourite always comes up trumps — whatever the season. Whether you’re looking for a homely refuge surrounded by winter-warming British pubs, or a summer sojourn complete with terrace garden and Thames-side strolls, this is the stay for you. And with lively Hammersmith a short walk over the bridge, with handy Tube links to Central London, Knightsbridge, and Heathrow; you can feel smugly secluded and brilliantly connected in equal measure.

Weaving deftly between old-school classic and modern comfort, there’s something for everyone here. The living room delivers on traditional comfort in the same way as a steaming cup of cocoa, with its mahogany tones, snug textures, and period-style fireplace. Throw in some plush seating and an adorable miniature rocking horse, and we’d opt for a night in any day of the week. By contrast, the open-plan kitchen and dining area has sleek, contemporary fittings, although smart wood furniture nods to that old-time aesthetic. Upstairs, two bedrooms pair simple design with rooftop views; one commanding a rather enviable mezzanine ensuite, complete with free-standing bath — the perfect antidote to a busy day.

We love…
Need a day off exploring? The joy of a private terrace is you don’t even have to leave the house. Smart decking, outdoor furniture, and a peppering of well-preened plants afford a delightful spot for enjoying some fresh air and a few al frescos meals in warmer weather. If you fancy venturing slightly further afield, we'd recommend the nearby London Wetland Centre — for leafy walks, wildlife spotting, and a slice of cake.

Home Truths:
No smoking or parties! Well-behaved pets are welcome on-request, please just let us know at the time of booking. This home is set over three floors with step access. Well behaved dogs are allowed on request. There's a gas fireplace in the living room and underfloor heating downstairs. Part of this home's charm is its record collection and vintage turntable, but please don't handle or use these items - they're very important to the host and we'd hate to see them damaged.

Why they chose this property

Beautiful Barnes is just down the road from Putney and leads towards Richmond. There are a number of exceptional 18th and 19th century buildings in and around its historic village which is centred on the pond, forming the Barnes Village conservation area. Barnes Common is a local nature reserve and an important open space spanning 120 acres. It provides a rural setting to the village and a wealth of habitats including acid grassland, scrub, woodland and wetland which were turned into a wetland habitat and bird sanctuary in 1995 called the London Wetland. Like Putney, Barnes boasts a rock and roll history with the former Olympic Studios on Church Road playing host to many of rock and pop's greatest stars throughout the decades. From The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, right through to modern day Coldplay and Madonna.

Neighbouring Putney lies just south of the river and is full of leafy, quiet roads and green areas. Putney Heath is the biggest outdoor area and this borders Wimbledon common which in turn spills over to Richmond Park and beyond which makes for beautiful secluded walks. Along the river are the famous boathouses and tow paths where you can take a wander down the banks of the Thames and all the way to Chiswick and Richmond along the shaded gravel paths! This is also the starting location for the historic Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, which started in 1829 and now takes place every year before Easter with people lining the banks to cheer on the teams – an incredibly exciting event which takes over South West London every year!

The high street in Putney has many nice pubs and restaurants and even hosts a farmers market at the weekend. Along the river front near Putney Bridge there are some pubs offering more upmarket dining such as The Boathouse, The Star & Garter as well as the Half Moon Pub, which is one of London’s longest running music venues and has ignited the careers of many now famous musicians.
