About this property

Historical palazzo with private pool in old town m600

This beautiful palazzo, located in the historic centre of Corigliano D'Otranto, has a large terrace and a pretty courtyard with a private pool. From the entrance, a beautiful marble staircase leads to the circular upper floor: straight ahead is the large terrace, from which you can see the pool. A living room opens onto the first bedroom, followed by the dining room, a small lounge room with a fireplace, and the kitchen (which also has direct access to the terrace). Adjoining the kitchen is the smallest of the 5 bedrooms and a first shower room. On the other side are two further double bedrooms, which can share a shower room. There are also two further sitting rooms upstairs, where you can wander through the period furniture and Renaissance-inspired frescoes. Back down the stairs, into the atrium, is the fifth bedroom suite with its ensuite, very charming, bathroom (shower and bathtub). So, in addition to the various lounges and rooms, this house has 5 double bedrooms (of which 2 with air con) and 5 bathrooms (3 previously described + one on the large upper terrace + one in the pool area).
For history and art history buffs, here's how this exceptional villa came into being. Palazzo Papuli is a historic eighteenth-century aristocratic residence that has always been used as a family home and has undergone a skilful conservative restoration. The floors, doors and wall decorations have remained as they were originally, and the modernisation work has been carried out with respect for the original building. The building has retained some of its precious original furnishings, while some of its rooms have been lightened. The medieval core, around which this 1,000 m² palace was built, actually overlooks two parallel streets. The large residence therefore has a circular structure, built around a cavaedium. Inside, there is also an ancient oven with areas used for preserving food and storing grain, ancient stables with feeding troughs and pigeon towers (pigeon meat was highly prized at the time. Today it is the horse that forms part of the traditional cuisine in the region).

In Corigliano, everything is within walking distance. The modern town has several supermarkets and all the usual shops. There is a atm near Piazza Sannicola, 50 metres from the house, and another at the post office a little further on. Weekly market is on Friday mornings. Corigliano also boasts some excellent restaurants (both modern and traditional) and several bars, which regularly host live music - and not just in the summer season. The town is most famous for its magnificent XVIᵉ century castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Italy. Renamed Castello Volante (Flying Castle), it regularly hosts cultural and musical events (music and film festivals, photo exhibitions...), again throughout the year, not just in summer. In addition to guided tours during the day, which are available in English, the castle is open to the public during the evening, as it houses a bar/restaurant on its largest terrace. The villa (here in the sense of a public garden) features various philosophical maxims scattered along the promenade. There is also a play area for the little ones. Bars and restaurants are concentrated around the villa and in the heart of the historic centre.
You could almost forget about the beaches of Salento. The nearest are those to the north of Otranto, from San Foca (25 mins) to the Alimini (15 mins) and the Baia dei Turchi (20 mins). Lecce is also 20 minutes away. On the Ionian side, Gallipoli is around 30 minutes' drive away.
