About Leilani Brown
I am very much a Polynesian Cook Islander with 2 children and a Kiwi husband. Our family recently moved to live in Singapore on a work contract. We have lived overseas for many years, but the Cook Islands is our home and so we returned to build our family home. We travel a lot, surf, kite-board, bike, run and love to eat! I truly love the Cook Islands and believe that sharing such a beautiful place with others will only enhance their appreciation of natural beauty at its best! Renting our home in Rarotonga is the first step towards sharing this experience. We designed our house to suit us and the things we love. This is reflected in the interior decor and overall presentation.

Why Leilani Brown chose Vaimaanga Tapere
When we built this house, we thought about all the things we would like that would make us feel totally comfortable in our home. Then we realized we did not have that big a budget! So we cut our list in half and hence, the modern, tropical island home was built. We compromised by not being absolute beachfront, we could afford a swimming pool. The beach is only a 150m stroll away. We sat outside one evening and realized we needed to have 2 balconies so we could sit on either one and enjoy the sunrise, sunset and the breeze. This is the best feature, whilst the kids are playing in the sunny pool on one side, the adults are enjoying a good wine and some quiet on the cool, shaded side. We also included air conditioning in the bedrooms. This is a pure luxury as electricity is expensive but we can at least get to sleep in a cooler environment. Our main focus was to have large open spaces to enjoy. The open plan living and dining area achieved this. We put in big sliding doors that open right up to allow a breezy flow right through the house. We designed our own gardens, again based on budget. It was a slow but very rewarding experience. My most cherished moments whenever I look back and revisit our home, are the times spent in my garden. Watching it all come together and being able to enjoy each moment and feeling very blessed to have a beautiful home in a tropical paradise.
What makes this House unique
Our property is situated on the south side of the island. It is set back from the beach, but offers loads of privacy in a quiet neighborhood, with beautiful mountain views. You can view the sunrise through the trees and meditate by the swimming pool. Being away from the beach during the winter months (June-September) means we are protected from the constant prevailing southern winds. Our location is ideal, you can walk to the local supermarket, the local cafe, the local takeaway, and restaurants. You can wander across the road for a spa massage. You can bike to town and back. You are only 20 minutes from the airport too. We are on the south side of the island which is handy to the night markets and muri beach where most watersport activities take place. My profile photo shows muri beach in the background, one of my favorite places to hang out. Our home is the perfect combination of modern (dishwasher, dryer, washing machine, air-con, fans, tv, wifi, etc) and tropical (lush gardens, goats, chickens, quiet, coconut trees and friendly neighbors). It's hard to get it all under one roof.

Warm mid winter break
Lovely well kept home and although not right on the beach in a way it was an advantage as we could retreat from the tourists and locals on scooters :) We were met on arrival by Lalani's delightful parents and shown around the property also made aware we could easily contact them at anytime. A lovely complimentary bottle of wine and lots of lovely cold water was left in the fridge for our arrival.
We shopped at the comprehensive store just down the road with all we needed to give us a kick start. I was able to pack a chilly bin in NZ and take to Rarotonga with no hassle. I took just some of the more decadent nibbles for lunches by the pool!! Spent our days falling in and out of the beautiful big clean pool . Sun soaking and reading (3 books!!) Lovely walks on the beach and visits around the island in our little rental car. We ate out some times but prefered to shop at the big supermarket and eat easy meals in. Why leave our beautiful house. At night my favourite thing was to lie in our comfortable bed looking at the stars and listening to the surf break on the reef.
We loved our stay and would certainly recommend Surf Mist as a great place to stay.
