About this property

6 Bedroom House close to Petoskey, Harbor Springs & Mackinaw 350 private acres

Grandma's house sits on a private 350 acre parcel in a quiet rural setting. The road ends at the house; there are no cars going by!!This past winter the house was extensively updated in many areas.
Yes, we have WiFi.
The home is located within a half an hour or less from Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and Mackinaw City. You are also within a half an hour or less of beautiful beaches on Lake Michigan, golf courses, inland lakes, shopping and dining.
There is an outdoor grill and fire pit with plenty of wood for your use as well. Plan on s’mores around an evening fire. Or just sit and enjoy the glow and aroma of a campfire.
Grandma’s house is surrounded with cottage flowers year around. Roses, Daisies, Lilly’s, Holly Hocks, Mallow, Hydrangeas, Hostas Daffodils, and Phlox are some of the flowers. In addition, there are apple and pear trees blooming in the spring along with flowering crab trees.
Enjoy your coffee or favorite drink on one of the decks or under the shade of our large maples in the front yard. Be sure to bring your camera to capture your experiences at Grandma's house.
We are close to many excellent (and award winning!) restaurants: The Moose Jaw Junction (Larks Lake) is 2 miles away; The Crows Nest (Harbor Springs) is 5 miles away; Hoppies Landing (Pellston) is 13 miles away; and historic Leggs Inn (Cross Village) is 7 miles away; this is a must stop, awesome bluff sunsets in the garden dining area. All have great food, family atmosphere, and affordable pricing. In addition, there are several more great restaurants within 30 minutes of the house.
One of the beaches you have to visit is Sturgeon Bay; miles of dunes, sandy beaches and clear water. Water depth starts out shallow enough for children to play without entering deeper water. Visit early in your stay because you will want to return to the beach. Relax at the beach and order take out from the Moose Jaw when you return.
We are fifteen minutes from Boyne Highlands and their multiple golf courses. There are also several other courses within 30 minutes of the house.
There are multiple unique shopping experiences within a half hour of the house as well. Downtown Harbor Springs offers many shopping opportunities as well as Staffords Pier restaurant.
You can spend a whole day shopping in Mackinaw City. Be sure to have lunch at the Keyhole; a unique restaurant/ bar.
Come back the next day and take a ferry to Mackinaw Island where no cars are allowed. Enjoy a horse drawn buggy ride or rent a bicycle to tour the island or simply walk around the island. There are several historic sites on the island including the famous Grand Hotel.
Take a day or two and cross the Mackinaw bridge (20 minute drive to bridge) and visit the scenic upper peninsula. Sites like Pictured Rocks the Soo Locks and Tahquamenon falls are a short drive away. All are unique. We like the 2 hour boat tour of pictured rocks originating in Munising. You need to book ahead.
The property has miles of walking trails which provide you with an opportunity to experience the beauty of nature, including all types of vegetation and wildlife. You will walk up on deer as they browse in the woods. Most of our deer are on the tamer side and usually just stand and watch you, wondering what you are doing there!! Beautiful views year around especially in the spring when the thousands of trilliums and jack in a pulpits are blooming along side several other wild flowers. We have over ten different types of ferns on our property. The trails are cleared and maps are provided by attachments sent to you. There are challenging hilly trails and many leisurely trails to just saunter along enjoying the quiet and beauty.
Take a picnic lunch and have lunch on one of our hills that provide spectacular views (see pictures).
Enjoy viewing the deer from one of our decks as they come into the yard to browse. Watch the many birds that visit our feeders all day long; included humming birds, finches, robins, several varieties of woodpeckers, gross beaks, killdeers, nut hatches, blue birds and many other varieties while you enjoy your relaxing moments in total privacy. The evening sky is filled with bottomless stars. We have a special viewing location you can drive up to where you can sit back and view the constellations and even the shooting stars. Many guests tell us it is better than the Dark Sky exhibit in Mackinaw. The quiet is a relaxing experience; just you and the breathless view.
Leave your stress behind and come enjoy this special spot. We are sure you will want to return again and again.

About the host

Host profile image
My great grandfather bought over 600 acres in the early 1900's. Some of the land sold over the years and my two brothers and I actually bought back over 200 acres over the past 20 years. This is undeveloped land with breathtaking natural beauty that we have set aside to never see any type of development.
We operated a family sawmill on this property from 1946-2017. All that is left is a small sawdust pile as a reminder. The old barn stands as a reminder of the days we kept farmed as well as working a sawmill.
I have lived here all my life (70 years) and never get tired of the peace and quite that nature provides. There are so many special views in the woodlots and the fields and the view of the sky at night reminds one of how small we are. I have walked about every square foot of this land multiple times yet always find something new.
Two of our children and three of our grandchildren now call this their backyard. The land is all landlocked with only two corner entry points through Grandma's house and our children's houses; no through traffic or cars racing by.
My brothers and I view ourselves as temporary caretakers of this special piece of ground and we decided to use Grandma's house as an opportunity for others to experience what we do on a daily basis. We even allow our neighbors to freely use the trails for horseback riding for their enjoyment. Our hope is that this property will continue to offer the peace and quite for many many years after we are gone.

What makes this property unique

It is really relaxing to sit on one of the decks and watch the deer and humming birds feed in the mornings and evenings. A cup of coffee on the deck in the early morning with all of the birds chirping and the sun rising is a memory that will be imprinted in one's memory. Early morning is the best time for a quiet walk in the woods. Besides the natural vegetation and the well managed hardwoods to see walk through you may bump into a few deer, turkeys, squirrels, hawks hunting the trail edges, an occasional fox or raccoon or even an eagle soaring above the fields in the valley. All of this in a quiet that has to be experienced; it can't just be explained as quiet.
