Location
One mile to First Encounter Beach (bay side). Less than a mile to Herringbrook Pond (fresh water). One and a half miles to Nauset Light Beach and Coast Guard Beach (ocean side).
Convenient to Orleans with shopping center and direct access to the bike trail at the dead-end of Ireland Way.
Equidistance to Provincetown and Hyannis. Whale watch from the former and shop in the latter.
Eastham is 'old Cape Cod'. Delightfully rural with the best beaches on Cape Cod. In 2019 they were voted as 2 of THE BEST top 20 beaches on Cape Cod - the only town to have both bayside AND oceanside beaches!!
3 miles between ocean and bay; it doesn't get much better than this.
Clamming on the flats at low tide (permit required-equipment in garage)) will make you feel like a native. Enjoy the best seafood at home or at local restaurants.
Traffic isn't a problem, once you get here. Bridge Road in Eastham connects Orleans to Wellfleet without the traffic via Herringbrook Road. On Sunday or Wednesday, the Wellfleet Flea market is a must. Local vendors have bargains galore.
The weekly newspaper, The Cape Codder, will be waiting for you. Check it out & Enjoy the many free activities at the library or other venues.
Other Activities: The local theatre scene is fabulous. In Orleans, there is The Academy of Performing Arts. One of the frequent lead actors is in the family so we're quite proud of this venue.
There are other theaters, in Brewster, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown. And, the Cape Playhouse, in Dennis, is know for their fabulous equity theatre.
The Wellfleet drive-in theatre is one of the last remaining in the nation. If they are offering a show you'd enjoy make sure to go. Your kids will love the experience.
In Dennis, at the Cape Cinema, adults will enjoy the unique atmosphere and the great selection of films they offer. It's only about 20 minutes from the house and perfect for the (ugh!!) rainy afternoon.
The Orpheum Theatre in Chatham offers a unique experience with a mini restaurant and two theatre options.
Brewster's Museum of Natural History and Wellfleet's Audobon are great for all. They are well staffed and offer insight to the Cape and it's natural habitat. The Cape Cod National Seashore has a wonderful space in Eastham and varies their programs.
The displays and films are all free so stop to learn how the Cape was formed. From there, walk the beautiful bike path to Coast Guard Beach.
Golf: Golfing on Cape Cod is available year round. There are five beautiful public courses (one for each day of the week) at Chequessett Yacht and Country Club in Wellfleet about 5 miles from the house (508-349-3704), The Captain's Golf Course in Brewster (508-896-1716) about 5 miles from the house, Harwichport Golf Club about 25 miles from the house (508-432-0250), Highland Golf Links in Truro about 8 miles from the house (508-487-9201) and Blue Rock Resort and Golf Course in South Yarmouth about 8 miles from the house (508-398-9295).
Cape Cod Hospital is 30-40 minutes and there is also Fontaine Medical Center 20-25 minutes away in Harwich at Exit 10.
Rock Harbor in Orleans is just 10 minutes from the house. Here you can see the Charter Boats return with their catch. Book a half day fishing trip and enjoy the experience on the bay.
Fort Hill is just 5 minutes away, across Route 6 in Eastham. The walking trails are well maintained and meander through the Red Cedar Swamp. From there, you can walk out to Coast Guard Beach.

Ask a questionAbout Liz Smith
My first visit to Cape Cod was as a middle school student from Connecticut. It was love at first sight and I said to myself, "Someday, I'm going to live here". And, in 1979, with my husband and five children, ranging in age 3-13, I did. The family run motel business that created the move, however, proved way too overwhelming for the busy life required to raise a large family. After 5 years, to the day!! , the motel was sold and the house at 90 Ireland Way was built and became home. Cape Cod Community College is a wonderful resource for education on the Cape. It provided me the opportunity to get an education, be a stay at home mom and assist my entrepreneur husband who was then building houses for a living. (90 Ireland Way is the result of that endeavor). Renting the house in the summer, after the children were grown and on their own, was the plan. However, after graduation from an off-Cape college, it was evident that my marriage couldn't survive the change. Renting the house then became essential for repairs and maintenance. So, for the past 20 years, many different families have enjoyed a summer vacation on Cape Cod in this wonderful family home. The house has become even more important to my children - all adults now - and my grandchildren, too. My oldest granddaughter, Liz, loves this house and considers it "home". For her 21st birthday, she asked if we could celebrate at Ireland Way on the Cape. And, of course, we did!! People ask "Where do you go during the summer?" It's simple, I move to my daughter's house in Brewster for the months of summer renting. We have a great time together and it's sort of like a vacation for us. She has a darling Cockapoo so instead of just going daily to walk him while my daughter is at work, I'm there for walks with her as well. After a 20 year career in the senior services field, I am happily retired (did I say VERY happily retired??!!) and love the freedom of self-employment; managing my house rental.
Liz Smith purchased this house in 1984
Why Liz Smith chose Eastham
Eastham is delightful with 3 miles between the ocean and bay with many beautiful ponds as well. It is a family focused resort town boasting the National Seashore Visitor's Center. Also, the Windmill is the oldest one on the Cape. Beach days at bay, ocean or ponds will put you into a new relaxed mode. Bike on the rail trail, relax on the expansive deck and just 'be' on your vacation. Great seafood store (Mac's) will provide the freshest locally caught fish or eat out at one of the many fine restaurants. Grilling on the deck is definitely an easy option. The house is kept open and heated during the winter so there's never a damp closed up sense when you enter. It's also lived in by locals so the furnishings are chosen for living and comfort. All beds are extremely comfortable so you'll have a good night's sleep while staying at this property. The houses on either side are lived in year round so there are no noisy parties while you're here on vacation. Families love coming to this property because it is so private. The house sets back from the road which is a dead-end street so there is no through traffic on it. The back yard is huge and allows outside time to be relaxing and stress free. The children can be enjoying the sports equipment while the adults supervise. Oh!! You have adults who want to play with the sports - great!! Go for it. Walking or biking on the bike trail is possible without going on a main road. Just ride or walk to the end of the road and follow the path between two split rail fences. Just below is the bike path with Orleans to the right and Wellfleet to the left. The best kept secret to this property is that the back roads allow you to go into Orleans or up to Wellfleet without going on Route 6. Just follow Bridge Road to Herringbrook Road and then when it ends, bear left on Massasoit Road. You can drive to the drive-in movie theatre this way as well as the flea markets hosted there in the summer.
What makes this house unique
90 Ireland Way was built as our family home in 1984. Five children enjoyed growing up here and many of their local friends considered the house their 'home' as well. Since they are now grown and living alone or with husbands and children, the house has been enjoyed by summer vacationers for the past 20 years. During the off-season, we gather for holidays and memorable occasions. Add 90 Ireland Way to your vacation memories; it's a house meant to be enjoyed for just this purpose. Eastham is equi-distance from Provincetown and Hyannis. It's an easy drive to enjoy whale watching (recommend Provincetown for this) where several boats are available. Sport fishing is fabulous at Rock Harbor in Orleans, 5 minutes from the house. You can charter a half or full day in advance. The house provides ultimate privacy in an upscale residential neighborhood. Early mornings are perfect quiet time to enjoy the deck with that first cup of coffee. Convenient to back roads, it's possible to drive to Orleans or Wellfleet without using Route 6, thus avoiding traffic. A Super Stop and Shop is 5 minutes away, in Orleans. Also in that complex is a TJ Maxx, a favorite for discount shoppers. The Christmas Tree shops have a store just down the street from TJ's and offer a variety of super priced items ranging from home goods, toys and snack foods. Chatham is a lovely 'village' of shops that make walking down Main Street a pleasure. You're sure to find just the right item to retain your Cape Cod memories or even a gift for the person watering plants at your house. There are several restaurants to enjoy here, as well. Menus are in a notebook at the house. You'll be able to choose which restaurant is the right one to celebrate a special evening or for the whole family to dine together. For the whole group, you might want to go to Moby Dick's in Wellfleet. It's not far from the house and they specialize in local, fresh seafood.
