About this property

Peaceful Lake Retreat On An Island You Can Drive Onto!

Peaceful oasis for those looking for an “off the beaten path” experience on a car-accessible island on a quiet mid-coast lake. Leave your worries behind as you drive down a 1.7-mile well-maintained private dirt road, guide your vehicle through a bit of water, and arrive at a spectacular 6-acre oasis with 1775’ of lake shoreline. The expansive yard overlooks Stevens Pond, and the secluded, wooded setting offers a spectacular three-sided lake view, a sandy soil private beach with seating and a large picnic table. Remote…yet still with close access to coastal towns Belfast, Camden and Rockland. This island escape ensures a relaxing retreat for couple(s) or a friends' gathering.

The Property

*Note there are TWO buildings on the 6-acre property: a modern 3-bedroom chalet (the rental) and a sizable detached 3-car garage with 1-bedroom studio (the owner’s living quarters (not the rental)). To reiterate, 2 adults (owners) and 1 dog reside on the property. The garage and cottage are in close proximity.

The cottage has a spacious deck on three sides, all with lake views. There is a size-able lawn with outdoor furniture and a propane fire pit on the deck for you to enjoy clear, starry nights. A wide path and short walk take you to an open space with shallow water access and a dock for swimming, kayaking, fishing and just plain relaxing. There is an additional propane fire pit at the beach. Enjoy the various sit-in, sit-on single and tandem kayaks provided for a day (or moonlight) excursion exploring Stevens Pond. Easy walk to a secluded trail for nature walks, which has the only direct access to a 40-acre nature preserve: https://www.georgesriver.org/quigg-island/. Please note that some areas of the lake frontage have a very steep incline, specifically right in front of the chalet. Therefore, we advise this property is NOT suitable for guests with young children.

The Chalet (we are continually updating and improving our amenties…the property may look different from photos upon arrival)

2nd Floor Lake Side Bedroom: (1) King Bed
2nd Floor Bedroom Woods Side: (1) King Bed, (1) Twin Bed
1st Floor Bedroom: (1) Queen

The cottage is accessible with a keyless entry from the wrap-around deck, opening into the kitchen area, which is spacious and well equipped with plenty of storage and counter space. There is an area for you to hang your outdoor gear, place your shoes, recharge your electronics, etc. and where you will find useful information on the cottage, and what to see and do in the area (day trips, breweries, restaurants). The first floor has an open layout joining the living room, dining area and kitchen as one. The lake can be seen from these spaces through large windows and a sliding door leading to the deck. Furnishings were chosen for your comfort and include a flat-screen tv, selection of games and a large table to gather around to share your meals or just to sit and unwind after a day spent exploring. Also on the first floor is a bedroom with (1) queen and a cozy, full bathroom with bath / shower.

Upstairs, on the 2nd floor is a sizable lakeside bedroom, with a king bed, sitting area and exterior balcony overlooking the lawn and provides gorgeous views of the lake. A second spacious bedroom, with a king bed and a twin bed, overlooking the dooryard and has a view of the interior woods. In between these two bedrooms is a half-bath for convenience.

The Lake and Location

Stevens Pond covers 336 acres and has oodles of “nooks and crannies” to explore. It’s a major headwater of the scenic St. George River. Habitat conditions are ideal for a variety of warm water fish species, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel. Although there is a public boat launch located off of nearby Route 173, boats are limited to 10 horsepower motors, so the lake is generally peaceful. You may even have it all to yourselves depending on the time of day and year. You will certainly hear the exquisite and haunting cry of a loon or two.

The nearby town of Liberty, Maine is very small (population less than 1,000 and not even one stoplight) yet has charm and several required destinations such as the Liberty Tool Company, Liberty Graphics, Pottle's Pub, Good Natured Studio, John’s Ice Cream, Lori’s Café, and Lake St. George Brewing Co..

So please, you won’t be bored to tears on a remote island! No matter the season, there is plenty of outdoor adventure and sightseeing to experience in the surrounding area. All of the wonders of mid-coast Maine are just a quick drive up or down the scenic coastline! In fact, with a tankful of gas or two, ALL of coastal Maine is at your disposal.

Peaceful and relaxing
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful (too short) week in the cottage on the pond. The property has many amenities, from kayaks to propane fire pits, in a beautiful setting in a comfy home. We were lucky to be there during a full moon and clear night, with a stunning view of stars. It was a pleasure to share this place with hosts Kate and Joe, and canine assistants Karma and Dogma. We recommend hiking up the nearby Haystack Mountain, where from the summit you can view Stevens Pond and with binos see the property’s dock. Then return to explore the pond’s numerous nooks and crannies by kayak. A perfect Maine experience.

Lovely stay
We loved our stay on Stevens Pond. The house was immaculate and the lake really fun, especially with the included kayaks. The hosts were very helpful, lending us an electric mixer for baking, a basketful of remedies for when one of us got poison ivy after an outing to a waterfalll, and even letting us pick blueberries from their nearby field. A perfect spot if you're looking for a relatively remote vacation with attentive hosts.

Outstanding!!
Our family has stayed at many VRBOs over the past 10+ years and this is the best yet! Upon meeting Kate and Joe, it's clear why this property is so outstanding. Their warmth and friendliness in person carries over into the house, which is more than the listing shows. You rarely meet such kind, friendly people. We were welcomed with fresh baked goodies and a kind note and quickly realized that their home was our home. It was especially nice to have every convenience of home - from coffee to spices to paper products. This immaculate property is one you feel comfortable relaxing in. Kate and Joe were always available and checked in to make sure that we had everything we needed. If only all VRBO hosts were like this!!

Quigg Island
We stayed here previously so we knew how nice the accommodations were and what to expect. Once again we had a nice visit and Joe and Kate were very prompt to respond when unexpected issues arose.

Peaceful Retreat
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was very clean, equipped with all the necessities (and more), and perfectly located with a view of the water. There is an expansive deck with a grill, and seating areas near the cottage and water. And the location is ideal for stargazing. Kayaks are provided. Getting out on the pond was so quiet and peaceful. Sometimes we were the only ones out there. It was amazing. And the fishing was great! Kate and Joe are the perfect hosts. If you are looking for a peaceful getaway...this is the place. We look forward to going back.

About the host

After vacationing in Maine for 20+ years, we decided this is where we wanted to retire when the time comes. We felt it best not to wait too long to enjoy "the way life should be". We have not retired as of yet, but have decided to make Maine our full-time home. We thoroughly enjoy living on Stevens Pond and feel our blood pressure drop when we on the lake kayaking and fishing. We hope you will feel the same.

Why they chose this property

The minute we saw Stevens Pond we knew we found our home in Maine. It's serene, cozy and private. Every day brings a different view of the lake, the sky, the trees! It's spectacular. As we have spent many of our past vacations renting cabins on the coast or on a lake in Maine, we know first hand what makes a good experience...a clean house, a comfy bed, cozy furniture, a fully equipped kitchen, etc. So we have done our best to think of and provide the same (and more) for you.

What makes this property unique

You can make this property WHATEVER you want - a secluded oasis where you, family and/or friends may relax and enjoy all that a lake vacation has to offer - swimming, fishing, kayaking, sunning, bbqing, walking; or a base to come home to as you explore all that is nearby - cute coastal towns, artwalks, parks, shops, restaurants, wineries. breweries, schooner day trips, whale watching and so much more.
