Farmstay on Permaculture small farm, near Otaki
Gary and Emily have lived on the property for 30years and brought their two daughters up there. They have worked professionally in engineering/water and soil, and landscape architecture/organic horticulture. They are now semiretired - but their lifestyle still keeps them pretty busy.

Nice long weekend
What everyone else has said. Friendly and helpful hosts. Interesting to see permaculture in action. Close by lots of places to visit. Lovely spot to stay. Enjoyed cooking on the woodburning stove- though we could use the gas cooker too.
Friendly and welcoming
Loved it . Cute relaxed and friendly.
Great relaxing stay
Enjoyed getting away from the city and enjoying a family (plus dog) farm stay. Loved the bush walks.
A Relaxing Getaway
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Hanawera. The cabin had everything we needed, and was an interesting building. The spring water was particularly nice! We enjoyed some walks, and yes, as others have commented we were sometimes escorted by the dog! Make sure you take water bottles and a camera on the walk up the hill. The round trip takes about 2 hours and there are lots of great views along the way. Very friendly pigs were roaming around, and they were not at all intimidating, although small children may find their non AA Milne Piglet appearance a bit frightening. The pool area was lovely and sheltered, being surrounded by bushes. The water was quite cold, but as it is continuously fed by the spring that is not surprising. What was a surprise was that the pool bottom is covered with stones. I found wearing aqua shoes made it a lot more comfortable. And because there are no chemicals added to the water, there was some algae present. Vodafone coverage was marginal and often disappeared, so those addicted to their smartphones will find it frustrating, but I loved the sense of freedon turning my phone off! All in all Hanawera was a great place to get away from the city for a weekend and just relax.
It was really interesting to spend time at a property focused on sustainability.
It was really interesting to spend time at a property focused on sustainability. Loved walking in the reserve land. Handy to Otaki and Levin. Sensible distance from Wellington for a weekend. Loved being around the animals - made lots of new friends. For some reason, we slept like logs - very relaxing. Enjoyed the breakfast goods supplied. Queen bed was very comfortable.
