Sally Officer or Simon Bennett
About Sally Officer or Simon Bennett
Located in the beautiful Tiniroto, half way between Gisborne and Wairoa (approx 50 minutes driving either way), Mahaanui Station is a 614 hectare working sheep and beef farm. Simon’s father bought Mahaanui (Maori word for lots of joy/happiness) in the late 1950's and cleared the land of scrubby trees to develop pasture for sheep and cattle to graze on. Simon has worked the farm since he was 25 and loves to share his farming knowledge and lifestyle with guests. Sally works at the local Gisborne hospital as a nurse and helps Simon when needed on the farm. While their 3 children (all currently travelling overseas), have all followed in similar footsteps - working on farms around the world and studying agricultural sciences at university.
Why Sally Officer or Simon Bennett chose Tiniroto
Perhaps the best thing about Mahaanui is it’s not Rotorua or Queenstown. Instead what Simon and Sally offer guests is a peaceful, quiet and relaxing farm experience - full of breathtaking hill country with marked walking trails, private access to the gorgeous Hangaroa River and the opportunity to experience farming activities if they wish. They truly love sharing their piece of paradise with guests and teaching them about their farming lifestyle. There is always something exciting to do at Mahaanui.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Perhaps the most exciting thing on offer at Mahaanui Farmstay are Simon and Sally’s guided farm tours (NZ $30pp - on foot or in a farm vehicle) and shearing/mustering demonstrations. These interactive activities are perfect for groups of all ages, and make for a fun and educational experience! For those interested, group recommendations and pricing can be arranged with Sally either prior to or upon guest arrival. However please note that all farm tours and demonstrations are subject to Simon’s availability, and unfortunately cannot always be guaranteed. There are also marked walking tracks for guests to enjoy during their stay – one along the Hangaroa River & one that ventures off through the paddocks and out towards the back of the farm. Equally as beautiful there are also a number of unmarked tracks worth exploring. With gorgeous river and hill-side views in every direction, the photo opportunities are endless! And of course guests have both public and private access to the Hangaroa River – and will find a number of swimming holes and shallow river rapids along many of our tracks, perfect for a quick dip or a full-day of adventure. Some other nearby landmarks to check out include the Hackfalls Arboretum, Rere Rockslide and Ruakituri Valley – well known for its excellent trout fishing. And for those keen on exploring a little further, Mahia and Lake Waikaremoana are only an 1.5 hour drive away.

Great spot out of Gisborne
While this is a bit out of Gisborne, I'm not sure you need to head into town with all the great natural attractions nearby. Beautiful countryside with good swimming spots.
Hope you managed to explore our fantastic local waterfall just up the road as well as our swimming holes on the farm and at Doneraiile park.
A great time had by all
We stayed here in January with 7 adults, 4 children and 3 dogs. We all loved our time at Mahaanui, from feeding the pigs and the sheep shearing demo to the walking tracks through the farm, and from the welcome brownies to the suggested local activities described in the property info. I highly recommend Mahaanui, especially if you have dogs. Our three had the best time as the property is fully fenced and they had a lot of freedom.
Glad you had a great stay and you had fun exploring the farm. We are a dog family so know what it is like to have to go away without them. The only time we are a bit precious about dogs visiting is when we have newborn lambs on the ground. The rest of the year is OK usually.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Lovely setting with plenty to do or easy to relax and do nothing at all. Simon and sally are very kind and hospitable - we arrived to fresh cut flowers and lovely baking and Simon took us all to see the animals - a real highlight for the kids.
So glad you had an enjoyable stay and managed to get some R and R as well as explore the Tiniroto area a bit .
Great location and meet all our needs
Great cottage in middle of nowhere!
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Cottage is well-appointed and has everything you need. Welcomed with fresh pikelets and jam, yum! Plus friendly welcoming hosts and a roaring fire. Lovely to come back to the cottage each evening and relax in the peace and quiet with the fire on. Thanks!
We're glad you enjoyed your stay. The fires really do make the cottage cosy and welcoming.
