Bach or holiday home, 4 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, (Sleeps 9)
- english, french, german
Born in New Zealand, I currently live in Christchurch, although spent my childhood in Auckland. I am passionate about the outdoors and have spent my life sailing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, mountain running and skiing - in New Zealand and overseas. My children have spent their childhood holidays playing at Moenui. Now, it is wonderful to see them having holidays here with their adult friends. For many years I was reluctant to open up the home for the holiday rental market. However, it has been very heartening to see how respectful and positive the many guests are. It is a pleasure to be able to share this place. I only wish I could meet you all, but it is a bit tricky from Christchurch!
Moenui_Retreat purchased this House in 2003
Why Moenui_Retreat chose Marlborough
A holiday in the Marlborough Sounds, filled with mountain biking, swimming, kayaking, fishing and hiking, introduced me to this wonderful region of New Zealand. Excited about the prospect of purchasing a holiday home, I drove around for a day, noting appealing settlements, which also didn't have excessive travel time from Christchurch, nor windy roads. Shortly afterwards I purchased my holiday home in Moenui. We have had many wonderful family holidays here and never tire of what adventures and beauty the Sounds offer.
What makes this House unique
Within the first few minutes of arriving at the property, we fell in love with the beautiful view framed by the native bush. When not adventuring, much of our time is spent on the expansive deck (replaced in 2018), absorbing the ever changing light and ripples playing on the water. I never tire of this view and love the cosiness of the bach. The local community are wonderful - . forever helpful, welcoming and social.

Covid-curtailed but crisp comms
Thanks for your awesome comms and proactive action to ensure I was refunded. Sorry we couldn’t get there, due to Covid. We look forward to getting there for a relaxing holiday someday!
I couldn’t choose “not applicable” so just rated you as excellent for everything based on your excellent comms.
Sorry that the Covid circumstances curtailed your stay. However, I thank you for your great communication, friendly manner and hope that you can come and stay one day
I booked my parents and I to stay at the Moenui bach after our plans to tour the North Island were unexpectedly cancelled due to a pandemic. We were looking forward to visiting and staying for two nights, but unfortunately the situation quickly changed and we had to cancel our stay in the 11th hour and return to Christchurch before the lock down started.
The bach owner (Penny) communicated promptly and directly with me as the situation evolved, and accommodated our last minute booking and cancellation without complications. I could not ask for any more from a bach owner, Penny even issued a refund without question given the circumstances.
Based on this experience I would recommend this property purely because of the owners friendliness and efficiency, in spite of never having actually stayed here! Thank-you Penny, we will stay with you at some point in the future when all of this is over.
Thank you for kindly reviewing despite not even staying, due to Covid 19 abruptly averting your holiday plans. Your friendly communication and updates were welcomed. I hope you are all okay during this time and please know that you will always be welcome some other time.
Loved our stay , wonderfull place. Will be back thankyou
Great location and very well equipped. Lovely cozy retreat. We would love to come back.
A pleasure to have you stay and sorry that you had to cut your stay short. I hope all is well now (ignoring crazy Covid!). Remember to contact me personally if you want to stay again. Always welcome!
The views and tranquility of this spot are superb. The property itself is a bit dated and we found the bed a bit hard, but its just such an amazing spot, these can be overlooked
Thanks for your feedback, which I take on board and appreciate. Bathroom revamp was booked for this winter, but Covid will be extending this out now. The bed is a bit tricky, as it's so personal. I like a firm bed, but I will step back and review when I am next able to stay.
we suggest changing the expectation that guests do their own cleaning and charging for professional care because the cottage needs "spring cleaning" now, beyond what tenants do when they leave (sweep, dishes etc.)
Thanks for your feedback. I have decided to move to a 'compulsory clean' model - especially given the Covid situation, so hopefully that resolves the cleaning standard issue.
