Open Plan, Self-contained Cottage, (Sleeps 3)
My partner and I bought and developed Motuarhue almost 30 years ago. When we parted company, the property didn't sell and eventually I purchased it. In 2016, I opened ARUHE cottage to guests. For most of my life, I have been self-employed, owning several small businesses including two cafes (in partnership). I worked as a clothing designer, a silk-screen printer, a teacher and I have even worked for a Member of Parliament. Prior to coming to live at Whanarua Bay, I was self-employed as a house and pet sitter. Every day, I walk down to the bay with my wee dog, Kuskus. I love living near the sea, enjoy gardening, movies, art and music. I also like to read, enjoy good conversation, discussion of ideas, and hearing about how others see the world. Whanarua Bay and ARUHE is my idea of Paradise and I feel most fortunate to be living here. It is this sense of being blessed that drives my desire to share my version of Paradise with others. Why Aruhe8480 chose Waihau Bay
I had spent time here as a child with my family and later had looked at purchasing property here. The circumstances were never quite right though. When my close friends owned the Macadamia Nut Orchard just down the road, I used to come and spend weekends with them. I found it so restful and rejuvenating. When this piece of land became available in the late 90s my partner and I bought it. Although the relationship didn't survive, I did, and I've never regretted coming here to live. It's quite simply stunning!
What makes this Cottage unique
I live in a rather unusual house. It is elliptical, open plan and small although your first view of it may be deceiving. I moved here from living in a three-bedroom house and that meant divesting myself of an awful lot of stuff. It has been a great exercise in letting go of the things we accumulate over time. Life is simpler when you have less and I spend most of my days outdoors in the garden. I am surrounded by natural beauty; ancient trees and the birds. My daily ocean-side walks make my environment very special indeed. There isn't a day goes by when I don't feel truly blessed.

Delightful Stay in Whanarua Bay
The accommodation provided by Kim was located on a beautiful piece of land surrounded by native bush, a well maintained garden and a view of the ocean through the trees. The house itself was modern, clean, well equipped and comfortable. A real retreat in paradise!
I really appreciate your taking the time to write a review Mike. So glad you enjoyed your stay at ARUHE and thank you for leaving the cottage so clean and tidy.
Wonderful relaxing retreat
Aruhe was an absolutely wonderful comfortable modern place with excellent inside outside spaces. Kim was a great host with lots of help regarding the area and special little touches in the house that were exceptional. Great holiday!

Staying at Aruhe was an absolute pleasure!
We were on a short get away for our wedding anniversary and we were spolit from the start with the incredible scenery and bird life, a lovely bottle of bubbly from Kim and a kitchen loaded with supplies. The cottage was very modern and clean, the bed comfortable, and Kim and Kus Kus were just wonderful hosts, with lots of local knowledge. We will definitely be back!

Thanks for a great review Michelle. It was great meeting you and I so appreciate your taking the time to place the review.
ARUHE is the perfect place to unwind and relax. Far from hectic city life, there are no demands on your time or energy. Sleep in, read a book, take a leisurely walk to the beach, swim or just wander around the rocks. There are picnic spots on the property which is quite large and plenty of opportunities to picnic at one of the other beach spots along the coast.
Pacific Macadamias runs a Summertime cafe from the orchard where you can buy all sorts of macadamia nut treats, as well as a great coffee in a perfect setting.
Visiting a marae may be possible depending on guide availability and marae permission.
There is a wonderful walk uphill through ancient "bush" to the waterfall and a walk to the top of the hill behind ARUHE will reward you with a great view and a well-exercised body.
There are two restaurants and bars; one in either direction and both about a 25-minute drive. The drive back may limit your drinking behaviour.
Please note that ARUHE does not have boats or kayaks available for guests
