About this property

Sustainable Farm Rustic Country Getaway

Escape the hustle and bustle of busy city life in this country retreat on a working farm with chickens, bees, and goats. Our guesthouse includes a bedroom with queen sized bed, full kitchen, bathroom, and living area with queen sized pull-out couch. You'll have your own covered patio and chiminea, surrounded by ten acres of sustainable farm and natural areas. Hiking trails, country lane strolls, biking, antiquing, great sunsets. This is an inclusive listing - everyone is welcome in this space. The space We've lived on these magical ten acres for the past six years, pouring our sweat and tears into slowly transforming this land into a permaculture paradise. You'll be able to explore our garden, laugh at our free range chickens that forage in the orchard, hike around the pond full of croaking frogs, and enjoy deep, solid sleep that you just can't get in the bright city lights. PLEASE NOTE: This is a country setting. As such, there may be more outdoor bugs (ants, wasps, flies) and smells than are typically experienced in the city. Country life is quiet, and the sky seems bigger. You can look forward to awesome sunsets and starry filled nights. We provide linens, towels, paper towels, toilet paper, coffee, tea, sugar, dish soap, sponges, dish towels, and fresh eggs when available. The guesthouse has sustainable denim insulation, reclaimed building materials, and a renewable energy power plan. So come getaway and enjoy the country life in your own little home. Elgin has lots of small town charm, with well curated vintage spots, restaurants, a fantastic coffee shop, and more. It's worth a visit downtown. FOR DOG OWNERS - Dogs are welcome, but if they roam far from the guesthouse area they will need to be on a leash. We have guard dogs with the goats. To keep everyone safe, please keep your dog leashed if approach the goat pen. Guest access We have ten acres to explore, including a pond, garden, chicken coop, orchard, and wooded areas. We have some small pathways, but the more adventurous souls will require proper attire and bug spray for hiking through the wooded areas to slow flowing creek. There are full time RV tenants living on the property and the owners. You will have your own patio and parking area, but there will be other people on site. Our property is secure and accessible with a gate code. Hopefully being "unplugged" is part of what attracts you to staying with us but we do have "country" wireless (that can be slow at times) and all cell phones providers do work here. Other things to note This listing is in Elgin, TX, about 30 minutes east of Austin. Dogs live onsite. They are friendly but give a loud, warning bark to strangers.

We really enjoyed our time here. The guesthouse was clean and the perfect size for us. We had everything we needed for our stay provided for us and we were not disturbed at all while we were there. We've never had a more relaxed mini vacation and we will definitely be back!

Soccer weekend
We came to watch my grandson play soccer. We enjoyed our stay. The cabin was very nice and very clean but I feel that the outside ground could’ve been better kept.

I'm inspired by permaculture and sustainable living. My young daughters and I live on these ten acres, which I've owned since 2008. Since then, I've cultivated (along with many helpers) a the land to include chickens, goats, bees, a garden, and a small orchard. Our farm is SHAMBA, and we sell honey and other hive products, as well as jams, jellies, vegetables, and herbs. I'm a registered prenatal yoga teacher and I teach weekly at Body + Shine Wellness. We're so happy to call this place home, and to share our paradise with guests.

Why they chose this property

SHAMBA is an acronym for Sustainable Homestead and Microclimate Based Agriculture. This conveys a focus on place-based agriculture, observation, and refinement. SHAMBA is founded on the principle that all living things deserve to be treated with respect, and that we can raise food in a manner that is in harmony with nature. The word “shamba” also happens to mean homestead in Swahili, and perfectly describes the scope of the farm: small and managed mostly by hand.

SHAMBA was started by me (Sarah) - educator, yoga teacher, herbalist, beekeeper, and gardening enthusiast - in 2016, but the story starts much earlier. Over a decade ago, I stumbled upon a beautiful piece of land and fell in love. I had been searching for a place to put down roots after traveling for much of my 20s, and luckily I found her spot. My goal was, and remains, to create an abundance of food while using efficient management systems and increasing the amount of resources here on the farm.

Growth was slow at first as I worked full time in Austin, built a straw bale home, and had two beautiful children. I put in fruit trees, a garden, and chicken coop. When I began keeping bees, honey was added to the offerings and SHAMBA became official. Now I sell eggs, honey, herbal medicine and salves, and fresh herbs. Sustainability is the focal point of farm design and growth. As a certified permaculture designer, I use my knowledge (mostly made from mistakes!) to refine the flow of resources here on the farm to create products that are clean, natural, and safe. You can trust that SHAMBA products are created with love and care for the land, animals, and customers.
