About Sue and Mort Mortenson
Aloha. We are Mort and Sue, retired teachers who live near Chicago. Although we aren't able to come to Maui as often as we would like, every trip is filled with as much excitement as the cruise that introduced us to this marvelous island. Whenever we come to Mort's Port, we spend at least 50% of our time working to improve our home-away-from-home. We strive to make our unit feel as comfortable and look as appealing (in an island kind of way) as we possibly can.
Sue and Mort Mortenson purchased this Condo in 1994
Why Sue and Mort Mortenson chose Maalaea
Kanai A Nalu is a beautiful, centrally located condominium on Maalaea Bay. The street is relatively quiet, unlike many vacation rentals in nearby towns that have constant traffic whizzing by. We like the building being all-concrete construction and well situated near the ocean. It's also nice to be so close to the harbor, restaurants, and shops. In the winter months, we have a great vantage point for seeing whales frolicking in the bay. Turtles can be seen year-round.
What makes this Condo unique
Ours is one of the 16 oceanview units that face straight out to the water, 12 of us above ground level. That means that we have a fantastic view of the ocean, both from inside the unit and out on the lanai. Since the straight-out facing units have more lanai space than those on an angle, we are able to provide a spacious table that can accommodate every guest with nobody having their back to the ocean. Sitting on the lanai and gazing across the courtyard to the beautiful bay is close to being addictive.

Maui in February!
We enjoyed our month long stay in Maui very much. Great weather, beautiful water and scenery. We were promised whale sightings from our 3rd Floor lanai and that was exactly what we got, each and every day. The condo was clean and well stocked and the common area and pool were great. The only issue is that the beach in front of the condo was pretty much nonexistent, and so a big let down from what we had been told. The area is quiet and laid back, so if you are wanting lots of people and places to eat and shop you will be limited in the immediate area.
Sally wrote from the airport on the day of their departure: "We all want to say how much we enjoyed our view and accommodations on our first trip to the islands." We completely understand why her review is 4 stars, instead of our usual 5. When she booked a Feb. stay back in early June, our listing did say that our location was 120 ft. from a sandy beach. The beach is now part sand, part rocks. We now recommend taking a 5 min. walk by two other condo buildings to get to a nice sandy beach that has always been much larger than ours. Those who don't want to walk can drive over. [Side note: This was our last rental before the corona virus arrived in Hawaii. We have authorized full refunds to those who have booked and changed their minds. Let's all pray that the time will come sooner rather than later when travel won't seem so dangerous and people can bask again in the delights of Maui.]
Mahalo and best wishes from Mort and Sue
Great location for relaxation
Very nice condo with all the amenities of home. Upon arrival it was a little confusing to find our unit because the buildings are not marked and you can’t see unit numbers from the parking lot. Also, no signage to indicate where elevators are located. After first 20 minutes we were able to find our unit and from then on all was good. Would highly recommend them
We're sorry that these renters had problems finding our unit the first day. There are 20 units per floor, and each has a number on the door that begins with 1, 2, 3 or 4. That number corresponds to the floor that you're on. The building has 2 elevators, which means that you are never more than 8 doors away from your destination. (Our place is just 2 doors away from one of the elevators.) Once you get oriented, you'll feel that staying at Mort's Port is like staying at your dream home in paradise-- not Paradise Lost. M & S

Had a great time
Glad you did. Come back anytime. Sue
A lovely place
Everything as advertised. Very clean, great communications with owners/ managers. Nice warm weather, mild breezes. Didn’t get to sit out on lawn facing ocean as the grounds are being restored.
We appreciate the 5-star review despite the fact that this guest did not have the pleasure of lounging in the courtyard. That is now an option again, and the view of the ocean is as fabulous as always--but due to recent adverse weather, direct access to our beach is not possible. It's a 5 min. walk (sidewalk and short path through a park) to get to a larger sand beach to our east. During our current end-of-year visit to Maui, we have been pleased to see a turtle resting along our shoreline and whales cavorting in the bay. (The whales are most readily seen from a whale watch cruise.) Aloha from Sue and Mort
This property is amazing. The view is spectacular and the kitchen is so well stocked. The only supplies we bought were avocado oil and coffee. The oil we left for the next guests! There are lots of pots and pans. We cooked most of our meals in the kitchen. Costco was our go to for groceries and gas. We saved over 60 cents per gallon.
The pool and grassy area over looking the ocean are great. My favorite part of the week was sitting in a lounge chair in the grass reading and listening to the ocean!
The team that takes care of the building and grounds is incredible. Never stayed anywhere that did a better job!
We were there the weekend that Maui had a heat wave. Be aware that the air conditioner struggles to keep it cool when temperatures are high.
Other than heat we were so thrilled with this place and hope to return in a year to see whales.
We are pleased to read about our guests enjoying the lounge chairs in the courtyard as well as some of the amenities inside the unit. We agree that exceptionally high heat can challenge our A/C, but we have a high capacity unit which will put a dent in the discomfort. Not as much as central air would, but certainly a whole lot better than being without A/C altogether. Fortunately, it is rarely needed, so most of the time the windows can be left open at night for the refreshing breeze and the music of the ocean. We hope that Ruth and her fellow guests will be able to have an A/C-less stay when they return. Mahalo from Mort and Sue
Many people enjoy taking a daily stroll along the shoreline of Maalaea Bay. The sandy beach begins about 200 yards from our building and extends east all the way to Kihei (approx. 4 miles). Most of the time Maalaea Bay is calm enough for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and boogie- or paddle--boarding.
