Why Kate or Dinah chose Camaiore
International sculptor Fiore de Henriquez was living in the area of Camaiore from the 1960's due to its proximity to the Carrara marble quarries and the bronze foundries of nearby Pietrasanta. In the 1970's she found the small hamlet of Peralta, perched on the hillside above Camaiore. It was remote, served only by a footpath, and the buildings were mainly in ruins - their inhabitants having left in the mid 1950's due to the hard living in the hills. No water nor electricity at this time. Fiore fell in love with the hamlet and managed to gradually buy the various houses. She then set about restoring them and the hamlet and created the very unique place that exists today. She died in 2004 and the hamlet was then taken over by a very good friend of her's who is the current owner. . Repairs and renovations are undertaken where necessary, but the essential essence of the hamlet remains the same as when Fiore was alive. It is the home of her archive and sculptures, which can be seen throughout the grounds and in the various accommodation, of which La Foresteria is one.
What makes this House unique
La Foresteria is part of the hamlet of Peralta and so benefits from the unique charm of the place. It is hard to describe the absolute charm and beauty of Peralta and why I am so passionate about it. I now own it and am as much in love with it as Fiore was before me. Every corner has its surprises, small details to delight the eye. The wisterias and bougainvilleas offer vibrant colour and essential shade. The views are wonderful, changing with the light, with the weather, with the season. Sunsets are magic. Early morning mist lying in the valley. The sight of Corsica on a clear day. The large bronze sculpture of 'The Phoenix' on the main terrace about to fly off over the valley. Fiore would say it signifies 'Peralta rising from the ashes'. The many sculptures Fiore left for visitors to enjoy on the terraces. Her private gallery which I enjoy showing to guests. Once a week, I invite (at aperitivo time!) any guests staying at Peralta to visit the gallery and Fiore's former house. I hope many visitors will find their way to Peralta and enjoy it as much I do ...... possibly even fall in love with it! Dinah Voisin

a wonderful place
We had a wonderful time at Peralta.
The location of the house is really outstanding with a beautiful view onto the valley of Camaiore.
The house has so much love for details, the paintings on the ceilings the beautiful rustique kitchen and there is a bathroom for each bedroom.
Even though the drive up to Peralta is a bit of an adventure and we really do recommend a smaller car to go up, we really enjoyed the location as it is so peaceful and quiet. We can surely recommend everyone to go there.
A fine holiday
An excellent house, near Pisa and Lucca and the beach. Ample room for 6 persons in la Foresteria + its annex.
The house is well furnished and has fine terraces.
La torre pendente in Pisa is open again! A must to climb it.
A piece of paradise!
Amazing appartment in idyllic location with spectacular views.
Wonderful walks and close to nearby interesting towns and the seaside. Dinah and her team are very friendly and go out of their way to please. The gorgeous 13century estate is fantastic even though the access us challenging. Definitely worth a stay.
Peralta was even more beautiful than the photos and descriptions on the website. The views are spectacular, the property itself lovingly restored and the house delightful. The sculptures at various places on the grounds add a special aesthetic - they work so well with the surrounding natural beauty. The owner and managers were very accessible and helpful when needed.
The only mildly negative aspect was the recent landslide that took out a portion of the road to the property. The extra walk was only about 10 minutes and a car was made available if needed. And repair was in progress so presumably this won't be an issue in the future.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property friends.
Sitting on our deck over looking the blue Mediterranean, looking down at Camaorie in the Valley, drinking lemon water with lemon that we could have picked from the many lemon trees here(If we were allowed) I wonder how to give this miraculous place a review that my words could adequately express. Tuscany.....a place where I have wanted to go since....forever. Pictures, Movies are what was in my minds eye as to what this place would be like. Our La Foresteria home fill those dreams and so much more! How can I explain our quaint, old, tastefully decorated simple Tuscan home. With its wood burning fireplace (in which we used on those chilly spring nights) to our view from our third floor bedroom. We sat up there at night on our tiny chairs drinking our Chianti before bed looking and talking about our amazing vacation home. We were there in the spring, beautiful warm days and very cool evenings, even so our windows wide open, deep under our feather duvet...the unit has no heat...but there is no need. The Grounds are very well kept - the terratzza...out front where guests can go to visit if they so please. A little bar on the honor system - who sees that now-a-days. The swimming pool on the upper level was not open, but I imagine that it is a lovely spot in the warm summer months. The purple wisteria, Fiore's sculptures throughout......Olive trees, the before mentioned Lemon and orange trees, bushes of rosemary and sage! It is truly a magnificent spot!
The friendliness and helpfulness of Kate, Stephan and Dinah...beyond what is expected.
Our only concern was the steep walk up to the house (not their fault the road washed out in the winter), in fact the walk probably did me a lot of good! But if I wasn't walking.....I would be driving a very narrow ride up...umm the walk didn't seem so bad!
We visited, Florence, Pisa and Lucca while staying at Peralta, all close driving distance for day trips away. But the best days were the quiet, relaxing days at Peralta!
We enjoyed the Pizza Restaurant in Pieve, and used the grocery store there to stock our kitchen. We did take advantage of having our meals made for us one night,(delicious Italian sausage and Chicken) but then enjoyed cooking our meals on the barbeque the rest of the time, if we did not dine out when site seeing.
Overall, I cannot explain very well the place that is Peralta. A must to experience....Our Italian Home!
Thank you for this enthusiastic review. We so love to hear our guests praise Peralta! It is such a very special place and we are happy that you had such an enjoyable experience here. A presto e grazie
A beautifully kept, inspirational house
This was a truly beautiful place to stay. Our house for the week, Foresteria had so much character, and felt so much more than a holiday let. It felt like an artistic and Inspirational home to think, draw, rest, eat and play (our 3 boys aged 4, 8, 11 loved it) The views were stunning and many evenings were passed staring into the valley, watching the lights, or looking at the amazing sky. The initial hair raising ride up to Peralta is well worth it!!! we really enjoyed the home cooked food, so tasty, from Laura, which was a welcome change from cooking ourselves and eating out.
The sculpture tour of Fiore's work was inspirational, and a real highlight of our stay.
The pool and its views were just sublime. The Peralta is a gorgeous place to stay, and Foresteria its most beautiful accomodation.
Thank you to Kate and the team.
Thank you so much for your enthusiastic review of your stay at Peralta. It is always lovely for all of us who work here to know our guests had a good time. I am especially delighted that you enjoyed seeing Fiore's sculpture so much - I love showing people around her studio, looking at her work and explaining how she came to Peralta and subsequently restored it. Hope to see you all back here one day. Dinah
Peralta is a hillside hamlet situated in the northern part of Tuscany, on the slopes of the Alpi Apuane (national park), 10 min from the market town of Camaiore in the valley which, in turn, is 10 min inland from the coast.
It is an exciting area to explore: you can spend the day in the mountains or go to the sea. The proximity of the Carrara mountains and the bronze foundries of Pietrasanta has made the area a favourite place to live and work for sculptors and other artists.
The hills and mountains around us are wonderful for walking and hiking in spring, early summer and autumn. Botanists are always excited by the range of wild flowers and bulbs.
Tourist Attractions: The beautiful walled city of Lucca is a 35 min drive to the south..
The A12/A11 autoroute exit takes 20 min, making day trips to Siena (2 h), Carrara & its marble mines (45 min) very easy.
the closest is Viareggio, the most popular Forte dei Marmi (35 min or so). The Cinque Terre are one hour away - one can drive to La Spezia or Porto Venere and visit them by boat - the ferry service is frequent.
Shopping in the area (Lucca/Florence/Forte dei Marmi) is legendary! The sculptors' town of Pietrasanta is only 20 min away.
Peralta is Ideally situated for the Puccini Festival (40 min away). Open air opera Festival taking place on the edge of a lake in July and August at Torre del Lago.
We have a mountain of information and suggestions for our guests, including directions for walks, when and where local markets happen, brocante markets,' must visit' places and restaurants, our favourite mountain drive, etc etc
Peralta feels wonderfully remote and secluded and yet is, in fact, very accessible.
In the daytime, there is always someone on site to help with all inquiries regarding day trips, ferry times, advice on this and that.
Airports: Pisa 45 min, Florence 1 h, Genoa 1 h, 40min - Bologna 2 h, Milan 3 1/2 h.
