About this property

Beach House Undiscovered Paradise

Set between the villages of Palizzi and Brancaleone and approached via a long sandy lane Villa La Buntessa with its 3 guest houses is set in a lush sub-tropical garden leading on to the beach beside the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Surrounded by terraces and garden, with hammocks under the shady pergola it is the perfect place to relax. With masses of space for kids its ideal for large families or friends to have fun as there is room enough for everyone to have their own space and yet hang out together.

Kid friendly with crib, high chair, toys, games and books. The main house is set in the middle of the property, and has 2 bedrooms plus a sleeping area with two beds for kids, a bathroom and a large open plan living space with fabulous Italian kitchen sitting area with sky TV and eating area. Outside, the veranda for al fresco meals leads onto the terrace with loungers overlooking the garden and sea. Behind the main house is the orchard with various fruit and fig trees plus a vegetable garden with ' help yourself' in season tomatoes, aubergine, peppers, zucchini, basil and rosemary.

To the left of the main house is the boat house overlooking the sea and beside the blue terrace it has a double bedroom with red cement bath tub! A large living area with another double bed and a large shower/wet room. Above is a roof terrace with breath taking views over the whole bay. To the right is the barrakka, again overlooking the sea with a double bedroom and shower room. Beside it on the blue terrace shaded under bamboo and bougainvillea is a long table seating up to twenty ideal for BBQ dinners whilst gates and a low wall give directly on to the beach. The pretty wooden house is situated behind the orchard and has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom.

The Villa La Buntessa is situated between the villages of Spropoli and Galati/ Capo Spartivento, where there is a beautiful lighthouse on the point, visible from the beach. A lighthouse has stood here since pre-hellenic times.

In Galati there is an excellent butcher, a cafe, a village shop, a pizza restaurant and a traditional Italian 'mama and papa' restaurant. The small seaside towns of Palizzi and Brancaleone are nearby, both a less than ten minute drive away, with supermarkets, train stations, shops, restaurants, etc. There is a great Tuesday market in Palizzi, and in Brancaleone a vibrant lido with beach cafes and a dive school. All the small coastal towns have their 'gelateria' usually also selling the delicious pasticcini for which southern Italy is famous. The local calabrese cuisine is unique, the local wines strong and delicious, the local people as warm and friendly as the climate which is also unique, with an average 326 days of sunshine a year, owing to the proximity to Africa, yet cooled by soft breezes wafting in across the Ionian Sea from Greece, so it is never stiflingly hot.

Heruntergekommene „Villa „

wonderful remote place to enjoy sun, see and sand
It was a wonderful holiday not only because the property is spacy enough to have everyone dear to me staying with me but also because place is a real paradise. Compared to usual standards in southern Italy it is absolutely well kept. The weather at this time of the year (September) was great for this very hot area in summer. Theres holidays were just perfect. So wish I could turn back the clock and start it all over again. Also the heartily contact with the property owners and the administrator in place made this holiday so very special.

Great holiday in Calabria
We spent several years planning a family holiday in Italy. After lots of research, we decided to spend a week in Tuscany and a week in Calabria. Tuscany was great, but the south coast of Italy was even better. Again, after a lot of research on the internet, we booked the Villa La Buntessa for our family of 11. It was perfect - lots of room, beautiful flowers, secluded, quiet, and a variety of outdoor space for sitting, eating, etc. And best of all, direct access to an almost private beach on the sea. The water was clean and clear and perfect for swimming and water sports. Our grand daughters had never been in the sea before and just loved it. The surrounding small towns are great for their local cafes and pizzerias and friendly, helpful people. There are also some very nice and stunning hill towns including Bova. The villa is made for large families and is well stocked with everything you need for a relaxing holiday by the sea. Make sure you read the owners' information on local attractions, restaurants, etc. It is an excellent guide for the area. We would definitely go back.

We always wanted to find a beach house so that we and our large family of 6 children and our 13 grandchildren could vacation together. My husband found the Villa La Buntessa and our dreams came true! As well as a thousand kms of largely unspoilt coast Calabria has a unique ecological balance between man and nature. The hills are rich with orchards, vineyards and olive groves, the economy and life rural, the mountains clothed in primeval forest where wolves, bears, roe deer, eagles, giant trees, lakes and rivers abound, and the iconic 'cinghiale' wild boar is still hunted in the traditional way, and served up as a delicious local dish. This is the idyllic kind of life which we, and we're sure many others, have dreamed of in this modern, post-industrial age, and which we found on the Jasmine Coast of Calabria.

Why they chose this property

Calabria and the Jasmine Coast, where the Villa La Buntessa is situated is unique. The coast with its miles of sandy beaches is unspoiled; the traditional Italian Mediterranean way of life still flourishes. In the forest-mantled mountains a unique ecological balance still exists, with Flora and Fauna that have survived from ancient times. The Ionian Sea is warm and crystal clear, and teeming with fish. Off our beach the fishermen in their traditional craft, fish as they have always done since time immemorial. We came here to find a place where time has stood still. The hills behind the coast are full of places of interest, Norman and Saracen Castles, Medieval hilltop villages, Byzantine churches and Greek Ruins. The hill town of Gerace is a short distance, with its unique Normano-Romanesque Cathedral, as is still with its Byzantine Catolica, Erra San Bruno with its church built by Palladio, and Locri, once a fabled Greek city state.

What makes this property unique

Relaxing on our almost private beach with the chance of seeing the turtles hatch, swimming in warm, crystal clear water, drinking cocktails under the stars on the boat house roof terrace, or travelling further afield to see some of the wonders surrounding the toe of Italy, such as historic reggio with its norman castle and greek bronzes, Sicily an easy day trip away, the beautiful Aeolian Islands, Scilla with its fabulous castle and restaurants, Gambarie with its ski-lifts into the cool, pine scented uplands of the Aspromonte. Glorious Naples, capital of the south, is a four hour, extremely scenic train ride away. There is a comprehensive file of information on all these excursions in the villa.
Of all possible holiday destinations in Europe Southern Italy is surely the most rewarding and least known. Italy lies at the heart of western civilization, and in southern Italy old traditions that have died out elsewhere live on, most of all on the unique Jasmine Coast of Calabria, where, for some miraculous reason, the culture-crushing boot of international tourism has never trod. When you come here you will be a traveler, an adventurer, and welcomed as such!
