About this property

A cabin in the woods like no other!

We’re offering our 2-bedrm cottage in Northern Me in the quaint village of Onawa for rental for the 1st time. Here’s why this rental is different:
• At least 2x day trains run right in front of the cottage on one of the few active railways in Me. You can wave to the conductors from the end of the driveway!
• Just down from the cottage is the famed Trestle Bridge w/ unreal views.
• Lake Onawa is a clean, clear lake and you can access it just 2 mins away from the cottage via an improved public boat launch that was redone in 2021. You can also swim from the boat launch. Additional swimming is nearby at Wilson Stream or up at Moosehead Lake in Greenville.
• The cottage is at the foot of Borestone Mountain, a glorious hike that is part of the Appalachian Trail. Other hiking is also available nearby.
• Monson is 25 mins ride away. This little New England town has some cool shops and a great General Store.
About the camp:
• The Cottage @ Fern Haven can comfortably accommodate up to 8 people.
• The Cottage does not have a bathroom but has a clean and well-lit outhouse right behind it.
• The Cottage has running water via a hose from our main camp, for washing dishes. We will supply renters w/jugs of drinking water to get them started. You will likely need to bring additional water.
• The Cottage has a small fire pit where you can tell great ghost stories and stare up at a night sky with stars like nowhere else in Maine.
• There is no cell phone coverage in this remote area. You will need to plan accordingly, but there will be other summer residents who have landline phones in case of an emergency (including a nice year-round neighbor who is just across the tracks).
There is a camp next to this one which we own and use, but we are not there every week. If we know we’ll be up at a time that overlaps with your stay, we will let you know.

About the host

Originally from the Midwest, we've been in Maine for nearly 25 years. We have a large family and bought the camp/cottage to create memories and give our kids something to be anchored to in the craziness of the last 2 years.

Why they chose this property

Onawa is a magical little village that offers hiking, boating, fishing, and close up views of active trains (they run on the tracks in front of our cabin 2x a day!). Hop, skip, and a jump from the Appalachian Trail (Borestone Mountain) and the 100-Mile Wilderness. The public boat lanuch has very little public use, as the camp road is a five mile winding way into the middle of the forest. The night sky is breathtaking.

What makes this property unique

Four season offerings - from boating in summer to snowmobiling in winter (all the way to Katahdin Iron Works), and everything in btwn. There's even a tiny Chapel in the village that offers Sunday services throughout the summer. Monson is about 25 mins away (convenience store and gas station), Guildford 30 mins (grocery store), and Greenville is 40-45 mins (also grocery store and the incredible Moosehead Lake).
