Look forward to exploring the beautiful Gendarmenweg on a hike or mountain bike ride. The Gendarmenweg is one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Denmark. The 74-kilometer coastal hiking route is divided into four daily stages: the mountain stage, the brick stage, the crow stage, and the beach stage. Each stage winds along the shores of the fjord, offering varied and sometimes hilly scenery. Along the way, you will have ample opportunity to see rare plants and animals, as well as many interesting biotopes and landscapes ' from orchids, frogs and birds to tunnel valleys, cliffs and rocky reefs. At the same time, you can discover the history and the many myths and legends associated with the Gendarmenweg and the borderland. The Gendarme Trail - then and now. Following the Gendarmes' Trail, it is not difficult to imagine how the border gendarmes kept their eyes and ears open as they walked their fixed routes along the steep slopes, through the mysterious forests and along the flat beaches. Their job was to keep an eye out for smugglers trying to bring goods in or out of the country without paying the customs duties that had been one of Denmark's main sources of revenue for centuries. The Border Guard was established in 1839 to protect customs officials on the border between the duchies along the Elbe River. After the defeat of 1864, the Danish border shifted north to the Kongeåen - and in 1866 the gendarmerie moved with it. After reunification in 1920, the border troops moved south again, patrolling along the present border from the Wadden Sea in the west to the southern tip of Als in the east. In 1958, border control was transferred to the police, and the gendarmerie was history after more than 100 years. But fragments of the gendarmerie path still existed, and in the 1980s the historic path was rediscovered. What does "gendarme" mean? The word "gendarme" is used in many countries, but can be traced back to the French "gens d'armes," meaning "armed men." French gendarmes were elite soldiers and acted as the king's bodyguards in the 15th century. Later, their duties expanded to include assisting the police in critical situations.
