The Neighborhood:
Lake Joseph is one of the Big Three Muskoka Lakes, and cottage country’s most star studded. Cottages are generally on larger lots on Lake Joe than those on nearby Lake Rosseau and Lake Muskoka and this attracts celebrities and the business elite who require adequate room for their toys, boats and egos, and prefer not to rub elbows with nosy neighbours. The maximal-living trend is most obvious on the lake’s northern tip, dubbed Billionaires’ Row. Lake Joseph is connected to Lake Rosseau through the narrows at Port Sandfield and the Joseph River. Rumour has it that Lady Eaton (wife of Sir John Eaton), paid $25,000.00 to have the “Joe River” blasted out so she could get into Lake Joseph so that she could have her steamship navigate through the rocks instead of traveling down to Port Sandfield. Lake Joseph has the deepest recorded water in all of Muskoka—measured at 93.8 m. Lake Joseph drains through the Joseph River east to Lake Rosseau, and is one of the most popular recreation lakes in Ontario; with an intricate array of islands, bays, peninsulas, and other various shoreline features.
