About Andy Fisher
Love my job as a lodging host. I wear many hats and pretty much enjoy most of them (especially the bomber!

Why Andy Fisher chose Isabella
Location, location, location. The woods and lake are beautiful and pristine!
What makes this Cabin unique
We're easy to get to but far from the noise and lights. Lots of Minnesota's rare and shy wildlife hangs out right in the surrounding Superior National Forest. You can even see the stars (all of them!). Peace & quiet...

Andy & Lura,
Thanks so much for a wonderful stay this past weekend. It was nice to stay at a clean place, located close to all the lakes and rivers we’ve come to know over the years. We appreciate what it takes to run and manage a quality resort and NFL was a great find! Our thanks again for the use of the canoe to add to our adventure. Guests visiting the area in the days ahead will experience some incredible fall colors… Thanks again for everything. We look forward to our next visit in the not too distant future.
All the best,
Dan and Wendy
Hi Dan. Thanks so much for your kinds words, time taken and appreciation for the inn-keeping life. Glad Shorty's provided a proper home base for your continuing exploration of this amazing wilderness we're fortunate enough to call our home. Looking forward to your return. Sincere thanks, Andy & Lura
Perfect family getaway
Great quiet escape, nice to get away from the busy city life. The cabin has everything you need. Very comfortable and clean. We used the stove, oven, and refrigerator. The fire pit was great and having firewood to use was perfect.
Hey Shawn. Thanks so much for taking the time to review your visit to Big Pine Shorty's. It certainly is a nice time of years for campfires . Glad you guys could escape from the rat race for a spell. Thanks again, Andy & Lura
Time away to unplug
Big Pine Shorty's cabin was the perfect place to unplug and relax in the northwoods. The cabin was very clean and the kitchen was stocked better than most small cabins. The location is great as it is located about half way between Lake Superior and Ely on Hwy. 1. We spent time on Lake Superior and thoroughly enjoyed exploring Ely. We even spent one day on the property and took a relaxing canoe trip on the lake. Got to canoe see wild rice up close :) Thanks for creating such a great place to unplug. Will look at coming back during the winter to take advantage of the skiing.
Hi Cathy! Wow...thank you so much for taking time to leave this glowing review. So happy to hear you had such a relaxing escape. Hope to see you in the winter. The Flathorn-Gegoka trails are just so magical and you can ski right out the door too! The other secret is that we have snow even when it's sparse on the North Shore and on any given weekend only a few dozen folks are out on our 20 miles of trails Thanks again, Andy & Lura
Quiet spot near lakes and nature
On our trip through the Superior National Forest, we chose to stay a couple of nights at Big Pine Shorty's. Everything was exactly as described on VRBO. It is a basic, simple little spot, but had everything we needed. Loved kayaking on the Flathorn lake just up from Knotted Pine Tavern. Thanks, Andy!
Hi Michelle. Thanks for staying at Shorty's and sharing your experience. It's a beautiful setting and a pretty little lake. Loved the pictures you posted to our National Forest Lodge Google page. Thanks again,
Great Little Cabin
We enjoyed a two night stay at this great little cabin. Our family enjoyed canoeing and relaxing by the campfire. A great place to get away.
Hi Jerrica. Thanks for making Shorty's a part of your family trip! Glad the weather cooperated for a nice evening campfire. It was nice to meet your crew. Best wishes, Andy
Little Retreat in the Woods
Big Pine Shorty's is clean and comfortable, with lots of hot water and a well -equipped kitchen. The sauna is great! The lake isn't much for fishing, but just paddling around the lake in the canoe provided, was fun and relaxing. We saw loons! We visited in Summer, but I think it would be an even more fantastic place to visit in the Winter if you enjoy cross country skiing.
Thanks Gail. Sorry the fish weren't cooperating for you. Glad you enjoyed a peaceful paddle in the canoe. You're right about the ski season and the Flathorn-Gegoka trails. They are magical in the winter. Thanks for visiting, Cheers, Andy
For those who enjoy nature and being close to it, this is the ideal getaway. In this remote corner of Superior National Forest, wildlife is abundant. Moose roam the area, and on occasion have been seen swimming in our lake. Timber wolves, pine martin, foxes, fishers and many other shy forest creatures are seen and heard. The surrounding area is very sparsely populated and offers many opportunities for exploring. The U.S. Forest Service maintains a number of hiking trails, picnic areas and public accesses to lakes large and small. Day trips to the B.W.C.A. wilderness are also an option.
Other Activities: shopping in Ely, kayaking, wildlife viewing, boating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing
Ski: Direct access to 30K of groomed, single tracked classic cross country ski trails. Flathorn/Gegoka trail system. No skijoring. Also designated snowshoe trails.
