About this property

Top of the Rock

This isn't a vacation rental...it's an ADVENTURE! Escape to an exhilarating hilltop haven on Top of the Rock, a captivating chalet resting 800 feet above sea-level that beckons you into a private paradise of farmland and forest. The triple balcony unveils breathtaking views of stunning Star Valley, nestled in the famed knobs of Southern Indiana. Inside, discover a spacious blend of rustic & cozy: a grand Great Room with a 30-foot ceiling, diverse common spaces, and comfortable sleeping for 10.

THE SPACE
From the moment you cross the one-lane bridge on Top of the Rock Road, you'll be entering your own private oasis of farmland and forest. One of the first things to catch your eye will be the charming chalet inexplicably perched on top of a hill one mile away in the distance, over 800 feet above sea-level. Excitement builds as you realize this entire hill and the surrounding area will be your private playground for the coming days.

As you make your way to the parking area at the base of the hill, you'll be greeted by your host - who has explained that the last leg of your journey is not accessible by standard passenger vehicles. You load your crew and your belongings into the host's rugged 4x4 and complete the last mile of the trek chauffeured up the hill by your host- wondering exactly how any vehicle can make it up such a steep and precipitous primitive road!

As you round the bend of the final sharp curve and disembark in front of the chalet, you begin to catch your breath and think for a moment that perhaps it looked a little more impressive from the ground. And then...your host walks you around the side of the house onto the expansive triple balcony... and it takes your breath away. The sweeping vistas overlooking miles of trees and farms is like nothing you've seen before. You find yourself already deciding which corner of the balcony you'll sit and sip your morning coffee, envisioning scrumptious steaks sizzling on the grill in the outdoor kitchen, and calling dibs on the porch swing in the cozy alcove by the fire pit where you can nurse a nightcap- with your entire field of vision immersed in the beautiful sunset.

Your host will gently interrupt your dreaming by offering a tour of the interior of the cabin. You'll be struck by the charming blend of rustic/cozy interspersed with the feel of an old hunting lodge. You'll be particularly captivated by the cavernous Great Room featuring a 30-foot cathedral ceiling and window-wall overlooking the valley - exquisitely appointed with a dining table for 10 and comfortable couches and chairs surrounding the two-story grand fireplace, where you and your crew can share laughs or enjoy contemplative quiet time around the fire.

In addition to the generous gathering space in the main room, you'll be delighted to discover all of the dazzlingly distinct common areas: from the table and chairs with rockers in the foyer; to the upstairs loft with couch, cozy fireside club chairs, and recreation space with card table that easily converts to bumper pool; and even a small coffee nook in the modern, well-equipped kitchen.

Sleeping arrangements are plentiful and flexible. The downstairs bedroom has an amazingly comfortable queen bed, while the upstairs bedroom has four twin beds that can be arrayed in multiple configurations to suit your needs: all four can remain separate, two can be pushed together to make a king bed, or you can feel free to arrange them however you like. There are also two comfortable queen sleeper sofas: one in the upstairs loft and one in the downstairs main room.

When you venture back outside, you'll again realize that you're surrounded by the very best that nature has to offer. The northern edge of the property abuts hundreds of acres of state forestry- hikers, bikers, horsemen, and nature lovers will be thrilled by the miles and miles of trails only steps away from your front door. With a growing list of on-property add-ons including food packages, trap-shooting, trail rides and more, you may never want to leave. Make your reservation now for your own private hilltop retreat- you don't want to miss the chance to choose your own adventure at Top of the Rock!

GUEST ACCESS
Guests have access to the entire main cabin (including all 3 balconies and outdoor kitchen) and surrounding property. There are miles of trails to explore just outside the front door of the cabin. There are three outbuildings on the property that are used for storage and not available for guest usage.

The final mile of road leading to the cabin is a steep, primitive, rugged roadway and is not accessible by standard passenger vehicles. For this reason, all guests must be driven the final mile by the hosts in the host's 4x4 vehicle - our insurance stipulates that no motorized vehicles may be operated on the access road except by the owners or their designated agents. Your nightly rate includes one trip per day up and down the hill, so you won't be stranded without transportation (unless, of course, you prefer to be!).

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
Please make sure you stock up and prepare! Among the most attractive features of this property are its privacy and remoteness, but that also means it's not very convenient to make a quick trip to the store if you forgot something. Your hosts have made every attempt to stock the property with basic necessities, but if you have special needs or requirements, we recommend that you arrive at the property well-prepared. We also recommend stocking up on food so that you can enjoy using the well-equipped modern kitchen in the cabin and grilling up your favorite meats in the outdoor kitchen.

PLEASE NOTE:
This is a remote cabin in the woods, and this experience is not for everyone. Please consider the following before booking.

This place IS DEFINITELY for you if:

- You love rustic, lodge-like surroundings

- You're thrilled by sweeping valley views for miles on your own private hilltop escape

- Ladies looking for a Girlfriends Getaway - escape with the gals for a time of relaxation, laughter, and bonding in a unique and tranquil setting

- Fellas looking for Men's Retreat - a time for iron sharpening iron, throwing some meat on the grill, doing some shooting from the balcony (an add-on with supervision from your host), and getting back to nature

This place IS NOT for you if:

- You don't enjoy heights

- You're put off by wildlife, insects, and rustic living

- You plan on making frequent, multiple daily trips to town

- You desire an urban, luxury-hotel-style experience

60th Birthday Bash

Top of the Rock exceeded all our expectations! 9 friends and I rented it to celebrate my 60th birthday. Robert, Kendall, and Kendall's dad were so kind, helpful, and welcoming. We loved our patio time drinking coffee together in the mornings gazing at the fog and Indiana mountains. We also loved sipping wine and drinks in the evening and watching the spectacular sunset. We visited the charming chapel and hiked 6+ miles on the Top of the Rock Trail (loop) behind the cabin. We loved the big table for our meals and lots of comfy spaces to relax inside. The unique decor and remnants of this historic property are intriguing. We will definitely return for more celebrations and relaxation together! To ery
