About Woody Mason
This is our second home and our vacation paradise, not just a rental income property. We have enjoyed hiking and motorcycling in the area for over 15 years and wanted a more permanant place to stay that felt more like home. We are so very thankful to be able to share our retreat with a joyful heart. Please enjoy Stoneybrook Cottage as much as we do!
Woody Mason purchased this Cottage in 2004
Why Woody Mason chose Madisonville
After looking at other properties is East Tennessee and western North Carolina, we discovered what is locally known as the Rock House. It was built by a local lumber / saw-mill baron in the 1950's for his personal retreat. It was then and is now truly unique. There is a calming influence permeating the cottage, allowing us to relax and re-charge from our busy schedules. We enjoy hiking for recreation and there are many trails to explore close by. We are also avid motorcyclists and this area provides so many great riding experiences and sightseeing opportunities that we haven't made a dent in them so far. Many vacation homes are newly constructed log cabins, sometimes built in almost cookie-cutter, sub-division fashion. Stoneybrook Cottage stands alone and it has the comforting feeling of returning home each time we arrive.
What makes this Cottage unique
Stoneybrook Cottage is also a bird watchers paradise. We have feeders for our many bird visitors and bird watchers alike. Humming birds abound along with more varieties than I can count.

Wish I could buy this place
We loved our stay at this fine little farmhouse. I would seriously consider buying and living here if it included 20 acres across the street. :-). We would definitely stay again.
It was very cozy
It was very cozy. Let's get the complaints out of the way first. The nice Berber carpet was very, very stained. You would not want to sit on it. The upholstering on both the sofa and glider rocker were also stained. Not just stained, but dirty. Everything else was very clean. The fireplace was not adjustable (we tried) so you could only use it for maybe 5 minutes at a time or it would get so hot so fast. There went the cozy fire. The washing machine did not work and we did not find out until we went to use it the day before we let. Had to wash undies my hand and wear dirty clothes home. ALL 4 of us. We could have gone to the laundromat, but we were just too tired to do that. We're on vacation, who wants to go sit at a laundromat to do laundry for 2 hours. He said it broke the day before we checked in and they did put a note on top of the washing machine, but we didn't check it until we needed it. Everything else was wonderful. Lots of silverware and dishes. It had everything we needed. Didn't have a fry pan, but we managed. Oh, the main bedroom was wonderful, the bedroom by the front door definately needs a new mattress. I ended up sleeping on the spare mattress they keep under bed, however that didn't last long. My husband kept banging his shoe while I was trying to sleep and I asked what the heck he was doing and he told me killing spiders. WHAT? I am deathly afraid of spiders and I swear as I sat up there was a spider on top of my blanket. And not a daddy long leg like some of them were. So back to the bedroom on the bed with the sunken mattress. We laugh now, but at the moment I wanted a hotel room. All the being said I would still stay here again, however the distance became a problem. We chose this location because it was supposed to be a girls getaway. We were not planning on going sightseeing, however last minute my husband decided to come with us he couldn't keep still. So off we went with a 2 plus hour drive each way. I will probably go back if they replace that god awfull mattress.
I'm always happy to accept a bit of criticism and try to take it to heart and learn from it and constantly strive to do better. Yet, I'm bemused by the 'let's get the complaints out of the way first' approach. My wife and I spent three weeks in July at the cottage and left things in crisp shape and although there have been a constant parade of guests since then, our crack cleaning crew (who I must say is as picky a cleaning person as is my wife) would have let us know that the house was less than clean. That being said, Stoneybrook Cottage endeavors to be the cleanest destination possible.
The fireplace is adjustable and perhaps our guests weren't able to understand the simple controls as they are not meant to be fiddled with by most folks. Yet, the fireplace is larger than necessary for a cottage this size and is too warm for warmer evenings. What we do is open the front and back doors if we want the ambience if there's too much heat.
I am aware that the washing machine broke just before their visit, yet, the machine is not really meant for guest use; it is meant for our cleaning people to keep the cottage clean for the subsequent guests, and for long term rentals. That machine is to be replaced within the week.
As to fry pans, I've no idea where the three pans could hide since we were there a few months ago. Perhaps under the stove in the warmer drawer.
Beds are a totally personal issue for everyone. Past reviews have said how comfortable the beds have been. A few other folks said not so much. I understand the problem. Pillows are usually a problem for me. We have kept mattresses up to date and most folks agree. Sorry that this guest was not satisfied. Perhaps we can do better next time.
Nice and clean
Older cottage but fit our needs perfectly only stayed the nights and rode motorcycles all day
Woody's Cottage is a wonderful little Cottage, loved the large front porch / deck off the front of the cottage. We really enjoyed the fire pit on the Deck. Beautiful part of the country. Cottage was very clean, plenty of outside seating to enjoy.
We truly enjoyed our stay st Stoneybrook Cottage!!! The cottage was stocked with everything you need to make our stay easy. Bed was comfy. The front porch was our favorite spot to relax before a day of motorcycle riding and the perfect place to unwind when we got back. Tucked away on the side our a mountain with beautiful views and roads at our doorstep. 😎❤️
